Whats the best Leatherman for old guys?
on: October 28, 2007, 07:38:38 PM
I have very little experience with tools in general and leathermans in particular.I would like your opinions on what would be the best leatherman to buy my Dad at Christmas his arthritis is getting quite bad (he's to stubborn to admit it) I figured the Wave for the outside tools
All advice gratefully recieved

Arthritic hands may find it hard to perform the one handed opening technique, rendering the OH functions more or less useless.  I would actually suggest a SOG as the implements are easily accessible despite being inside, the compound leverage would allow him a firm grip and the tension of pretty well everything can be adjusted to suit his abilities.

If you want to stick with Leatherman, I would suggest something like the Kick/Fuse/Blast series as they are well equipped, decently priced and the the implements aren't on a backspring so they also won't be difficult to fold out.

I was going to sugest the Kick... Its simple and pretty easy to use :)
I also think the SOG compound leverage was a great idea too.
Another tool that might be worth a look might be the Buck Xtract?

Maybe a Core would be too big? If not, it is one of the better tools for getting blades unfolded with fumbly fingers.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Well I would have to say that the best tool for old guys is not really a multitool at all.  The perfect tool would be the TAD gear folding titanium spork for eating all of those pureed foods. :)

Just kidding.  I would have to say that the SOG powerlock would be great.  Compound leverage is definately for arthritic hands that are not as powerful now as they once were.
