The explosion at the one plant was a massive steam explosion according to the news, NOT a nuke. The vessel that contains the nuclear fuel is apparently intact. They're trying to cool the core by pumping in seawater mixed with boron. There are two plants that lost their coolant systems when the quake hit, and temps and pressures are extremely high in both. There's been confirmation of a leak at one of the two already, but not a meltdown. Either way, still not good!

That was definitely not a nuclear explosion, thankfully.  It was bad, that much steam blowing out that fast is certainly not without it's own problems, but it wasn't a nuclear accident- at least not yet.

The Japanese Cabinet has just stated that they "assume that a meltdown has occurred" in one of the reactors in question, and also assume that the same is taking place in another reactor at the same power plant. This is a VERY bad situation. My thoughts and prayers are with all there.

yup :( sounds like 2 reactors are in meltdown from what ive read - they are using seawater and a chemical to cool them down i thinks its working thing is the sea waters so corrosive they will never work again

hopefully no radiation will leak out

I just came across THESE aerial pics on the BBC website, and it really put it into perspective for me. Just look at all the homes that aren't there anymore. I honestly cannot comprehend the scale of this disaster, and what the peoples there must be going through. My heart goes out to all those who have to face the aftermath whilst still being subjected to a barrage of aftershocks. I hope the geology settles down for them to at least remove/reduce the fear of another substantial quake

But at least , with the sea water, if a radiation meltdown leak causes a plume, the radiation itself will be kept localized

Horrible, but remember even if a meltdown occurs the structure is designed to handle it. remember 3 mile island? O radiation leaked out of the building during and after the meltdown. there are safeguards for this, and as long as the 12 foot wide concrete cooling pond is in tact(and they appear at this time) the readiatioon will be contained.

I actually live in a area that has 2 plants. one on the cape, and one in New Hampshire so we did really read everything that they ever sent us.

BTW the radiation levels in 3 Mile Island were low enough to enter it after 5 years.
