Straight Razors....anyone use them?
on: March 13, 2011, 03:46:45 PM
I'm getting fed up with the escalating prices of replacement cartridges for my razors and have been thinking of going straight, lol.

Anyone use them and if so, any suggestions?  How do you sharpen them?
Thanks!

I've been tempted - but not really tempted enough. I did get a cheapo to play with for less than £5 a few months ago, but need to find the time to get on the waterstones to put my own edge on it and see if it holds before running it over my face though. Till then I'm sticking with good old double edged wilkinson sword blades

I have been using a Henckels straight razor for 26+ years.  My wife maintains that one day I'll hiccup and I'll wind up on the floor and my Adam's apple in the sink  :o

Actually I don't ever want to go back to a safety razor.  To sharpen, I normally use an old  Chicago strop and have a couple of antique razor hones to use when/if the razor gets very dull.

BTW, I use the hones on my SAKS to finish their edges.  They get real scary sharp.

Just to clarify ... is that the same razor everyday for 26 years?

Yessir-same razor

I have my g-g-Grandfather's razor (a product of Sheffield) that I have used a few times as well, but the scales on it are not in the best shape and I'm scared I'll drop it or something.  Still, it is cool to have shaved with a razor that removed the stubble from a soldier who served under Nathan Bedford Forrest!

Thanks for the reply - very impressive - on both counts

F_C:  You may want to look on The Art of Manliness' website for more information on shaving by straight razor; from there you can branch out to shaving forums. :tu:

I use the gillette mach3 or fusion, depending on which bathroom I'm in.
But I have to admit that straight razors are much more manly (and cheaper) :D

My Grandad shaves with a straight razor. I'll try and find details of the one he uses. But he must have been using his since.... 1964? Around about that time anyway.

Been using DE's for about a decade now, always intending to move to a straight. Bit the bullet a few months back and now have some, but have been too busy to get around to training with them yet...not something to rush I dont think.

I've seen way to many really bad horrormovies to even think about trying a straight razor.. :P :P

I have been meaning to give it a shot. I even have a razor all picked out and ready to go as soon as I get around to it. I got interested in getting one a few months ago when I was cleaning some stuff out of the parents basement. I found one of my grandfather's old straight razors. I don't think its anything special and probably not even good quality, but i figure its the only thing I have from him so its a keeper.
The handle is broken and the blade is duller than a soup spoon but I plan on making a project of refinishing it sometime. (though I doubt it would be a user for me)
