on: March 21, 2011, 11:36:44 PM
Well I finally got that special box of goodies from Shane over at Multitasker. I am going to be busy taking photos for this thread...but to wet the appetite...

I wonder what can be in there?   :D

Here are the contents of that box...

A quick note first. I was wearing a red T-shirt and it seems some of that red got picked up, especially in the blades. Just a quick FYI if you were wondering. :)

Remington 1911 tool.

DPMS AR-tool prototype. (never made production).

ORIGINAL AR Multitasker prototype. (unmarked).

Series2 AR Multitasker with peanut butter brown G10 scales. (Ordered Tan and got this. Might be the only one).

Series2 AR Multitasker with Desert Tan G10 scales. (1 of 2 prototypes).

Ultralight with Desert Tan G10 scales. (1 of 3 prototypes).

Plus a few related tools designed by Shane.

Joe's Garage 14-in-1 tool.

NEXT Executive Precision Tool.

NEXT 8883 Skeletonized Tool & Knife Gift Set.

Union Toolworks 9852 Minitool and LED Flashlight Set.

Nice stuff. That DPMS tool is actually a cool one. I wish that one made it to production!

Thats really nice!
I'd be interested to hear what you think of the NEXT 8883 Skeletonized tool because it looks a doozy.

Hawkchucker...
I agree. It looks like this one would make a great EDC version with a few minor modifications.

Malarauko...
The NEXT 8883 tool set is rather interesting. At first, it looks like a lot of cheap multi-tools on the market, but the inside tools are different. I think they are higher quality then some of the other similar type tools. Of course nothing close to the actual Multitasker tools in quality...but overall, not bad. It is a very nice MT to be honest.  The accompanying knife is interesting in that it has a rescue focus. It has a belt cutter on the back, and a pyramid style window breaker on the end. The blade is nice and sharp and is easy to unfold. There is a large circular thumb disk and a flipper feature located on the underside of the handle that  allows you to open the blade one handed with a flicking motion. I have no clue how common the Next line is as I have never seen them in my area.

Nuphoria...
The NEXT Executive Precision tool feels like a miniature Multitasker in quality, shape, and feel with those G10 handles. The only odd thing about it is the tweezers. One fork sticks out of the tool when folded away and tends to get caught in the sheath if you are not careful. The Union Toolworks feels the cheapest of the lot. It does have rubberized coatings on the handles. The G10 feels a lot better in the tactile department.  I haven't tried the LED flashlight yet...so I can't comment on it.

Check out the open/close action on the Remington blades and tools. Then compare them to those on the Multitasker. You can really tell what a difference those bronze pivot washers make. :salute:
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

One last question Chako. Do you think NEXT is as good as or even better than Gerber?

That is a loaded questions.

I think Gerber makes some very nice MTs, especially their sliding head models. Not a big fan of their butterfly opening tools however.

There are also what I consider the "standard Chinese" made MT that are made in many handle versions for a low price. These are shaped very closely to the Gerber Suspension and the NEXT Skeletonized tool. They are in fact not a bad deal for their low price. These tools do not have locking mechanisms, and the folding tools are rather cheaply manufactured, but the solid handles and heft does give the tool a sense of durability and good construction. What I am attempting to say is that these ubiquitous cheap tools are good value for your money.

The NEXT tools feels a lot better quality wise then those other "standard Chinese" tools. The shape is almost the same, but the folding tools found therein is of a higher quality standard to those other tools, with the same good solid feeling handle quality that those other tools have. Is the NEXT better then a Gerber, and by that, I presume you are talking about the Suspension line. Gerber's biggest advantage over the NEXT is the locking mechanism. However, I do think the folding tools are of better quality compared to the Gerber, as I am not a big fan of bead blasting.

So in the end, I do think it is as good as the Suspension. Is it any better? You would have to find one and compare them for yourself. I cannot answer that as personal opinions creep in and ruin objectivity.

I can see what your saying. I'm actually not massively fussed about the Suspension tbh. My Grandparents have one and they like it for what they use it for. Other Gerbers have never really floated my boat though. The one i've yet to try is the one that comes the most highly reccomended (the 400 or 600).

Nice! Collection Chako you have going on there  :tu:

I like the NEXT 8883 Skeletonized Tool  :tu: I like the look of Gerber Suspension to but all the negative talk about it did not made buy one. Is the NEXT indeed the better execution of a skeletonized tool? Perhaps a small review in the future  :pok:  :D

Oh before I forget, what is up with that Remington plier? Is it custom made to fit an electric shaver or other grooming equipment?

Sweet. I knew he was working on outside projects, just not so many of them.

any idea if any of this stuff is available for those of us who dont need a multitasker, but who are too impatient on the EDC version?

I tried googling several of then but mostly was led back to this thread. other than a few links to Big 5 which looks to be a "fry's like" sporting goods dealer in california.

It is for a Remington 1911 handgun.

 Ah ha, a gun named after a grooming device. Freeze! Or I'll cut your hair! Very manly  :D

Anyhow, why does it have such pliers? Does it fit on any particular part of the gun?

I don't know the particulars, but I assumed those others were designed by Shane sometime in the past. I may be wrong on this, but I assumed he was focusing primarily on his Multitasker line in recent years. I do know the Multitaskers are of much higher quality then the NEXT and other tools that Shane has had a hand in designing for other manufacturers.

As for Remington, you are mistaking Remington Arms Company for Remington, the hair product folks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_Arms

Oh and it isn't designed strictly for the Remington 1911, as I do think others made it also, it being a popular pistol. As for the shape of the pliers, I assume it was designed to fit around the barrel or something. I am only guessing as I don't own a 1911. I am sure someone with more firearms experience can better inform us on its uses if need be.
