Water bottle or bladder?
on: November 12, 2007, 02:03:13 PM
I was wondering what you guys use, when you out and about, water bottle or a bladder ???

It seems to me that they both have there pro's and con's, but for me I love the rugged construction and flexability that you get with a waterbottle. :)

Bladder's seem like a good idea in that you can use them while walking, running or cycling ecetera, and I have got one, but to my mind the difficulty in cleaning them easily, and there relative fragility compared to a conventional water bottle mean's there just not for me :)

What about you guys, and maybe you could show us what you've got :)

I have some aluminum SwissGear bottles from Wenger that I swear by.

I think they are the same things, only re-branded with the Wenger SwissGear logo.  I got 4 of them (they came in a package) but the only one that's made it out of the box is the grey one, and after over a year's use (can't remember when I got them) it still looks brand new.

I have a long lanyard and carabiner attached to it so I can hang it off the side of my kayak in the water so whatever is in it stays cool.

Yes, I remember the picture on saktivity :)

If it's similar to the Sigg's then it is well nigh indestructable then, I've got three in total, 1 for my bike, 1 of the retro swedish army canteen + mug and one for my son to use at school :)

Handy lil buggers, and at 750ml, it's perfect to take a bottle of wine camping or on a picnic!

I like water bottles better but I also use a bladder when hiking & mountain biking. In fact it has saved me from a nasty fall on my back.

I use bottles to carry liquid around with me, but if i'm going camping then i'll take a bladder to fill up when i'm at camp, packs up nice and small and weighs virtually nothing but saves trips too and from the water source.

I've been thinking of a Camelback or other bladder system for my kayak, but the prices on many of them seem pretty prohibitive.

Bladders can be a PITA to thoroughly clean. Bottles can be just as easy to carry, easier to clean, and usually are cheaper to obtain.

I personally prefer water bottles for the shorter hikes, hunts, and biking routes that I do.  However, when I used to do fieldwork a bladder came in handy.  The bladder pack allowed me to carry a few small items that I needed and I did not have to carry my backpack stuffed with several water bottles that took up most of the space in my pack.  My bladder carried quite a bit of water more than it was comfortable to carry in bottles.  Some of the places that I worked and the times that I worked there required quite a bit of water to keep me hydrated.  In a day I could easily drink as many as 8 full bottles of water in about 8-9 hrs.  All those bottles take up a lot of space when full and empty.  The bladder kept me going without all that excess bulk.  Unfortunately, bladders dont work well for walking through dense brush with lots of briars and thorns which is why my bladder was discarded.  It got punctured and I discarded it.

Bottles every time. In the UK, as you never really get off of the beaten track, you look a ponce using a bladder system. Unless you're running, and I haven't done that since 1989  :D

I have a couple of Sigg bottles but to be honest I normally just use bottled water from the local shop  ;)

I use bottles for short trips on the bike around town.  I use a bladder for all hikes and longer cycling trips.

I just use an old coffee can. The large opening makes it easier to aim. In the woods I don't need it.

Something no one has mentioned so far is performance in cold weather.  I much prefer to deal with a frozen water bottle than a frozen hydration bladder.

With frozen plastic bottles, often I can melt the ice in the screw top threads with body heat, then unscrew the top, then hack through the ice with a knife blade, then pour out the liquid water beneath the ice.

Try that with a bladder!  ;>

ive never got my liquids frozen in bladder, but if your bladder system aint made for 4 season use,it might lack the insulating tube cover and the backpacks then usually lacks the insulation too.its pretty odd, since the insulation keeps the cool drinks cool, better even during summer.
