What's your favourite SAK tool?
on: April 20, 2011, 05:44:49 AM
What is your favourite tool on a SAK? Not just function wise but aesthetically, uniquely or just something you thought was a stroke of genius.

I think mine has to be metal saw. I've never used it to cut metal, but I just love the way it looks and makes the tool look when its deployed. Also the in-line Phillip's as a close second. It's amazing how it fits most screws I try.
All mushrooms are edible, some only once.

Most useful to me - the bit driver on my Cybertool

Hmmm, one of my favourites would be the light duty pry tool - so handy and so well designed, you can even use it as a flat head screwdriver and also open bottles with it.

Most useful: CyberTool driver/bit holder. But that's also the ugliest tool (I don't like the plastic "cage" thing).
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

The main blade on a Sentry for some reason.
That or the can opener.

I've used every tool on my SAK (Victorinox Explorer, I think). What I like the best--the small knife. I keep it good and sharp by using the larger one for mundane tasks. It's nice to have a good sharp blade ready, and it looks great too. Having the Philips tool in-line is so much handier than in the middle on the bottom like a previous knife I had. Sometimes it couldn't reach the screw that needed to be tightened/removed.

The screwdriver that hides in the corkscrew is cool. I never saw one until I was in Geneva (where I got my knife). I want to make a few like it with different tips; there are instructions at the SOSAK site.

The one I thought I'd like the most is the scissors, but for various reasons I use it only if I can't go get a "real" scissors.

Scissors. Useful even on a small and compact Classic.

It's a tossup.

The saw is extremely useful (on the Farmer), but

The Cybertool driver is a lifesaver

However, I use the can opener everyday to open cans of green beans for the dogs.

So there you have it.  :)

Couldn't have said it better. I use the bit driver a lot.

The pry/flathead/bottle opener is probably my absolute favorite. Nothing beats popping a homebrew with one of my SAK's

For me it would be the Wenger scissors. Far more superior to the Vic ones. I love the spring on them, the way they snap, the small teeth. And they never go dull. I used one of mine to cut everything from paper, cardboard, wires to tin cans and they are still sharp after 12, 13 years of abuse. And they just look cool.  :tu: No wonder Leatherman uses them in their wave, surge, juice models. (btw. does anyone know what the connection between LM and Wenger is? They have a lot of same tool designs.)

For me it's a tie between the 91mm wood saw and the 91mm pen blade.
The saw simply works and works great, it's all the saw I need out on the trail.
And that little pen knife is great for whittling, you can get your thumb over the whole length of the blade for very precise carving.

While we all have our favorites or top 3s or top 5s it's the fact that we can have them ALL in one tool that makes the SAK such a wonderful thing.

Good thread btw.  :tu:

Not so much one tool, but a combination of two: the straight pin and the tweezers...came in awfully handy when my niece got some splinters that needed removing.

I like the awl on cellidor for it's usefull purpose of sewing and I love the robust awl on the alox models, which is pretty usefull for multiple tasks.
The alox awl got a perfect feel in hand for every job!

I will add that I prefer the awl on alox models without keyring, which can interfere in some jobs.

The 58mm magnetic bottle opener Phillips driver. With the E4 gone, it's the only true Phillips available on anything smaller than a Juice.

I use the 91mm scissors more than any other tool I carry.  I love them.  The main blade on a 91mm is also a favorite, as well as the caplifter/flathead driver.  I carried a Spartan lite for a long time as a Building Maintenance Engineer, and I used the caplifter to pry open many an access panel on Fan coil units.  Probably the most useful "tool" on a sak for me.  The scissors I use for beard grooming mostly.

The combination tool. Bar none the  :tool:best cap lifter out there...better than the dedicated cap lifter!

The scissors would be second. All sizes.

Small blade. I probably use it more than any other tool on there just for little cutting jobs when i'm out and about.

This is going to sound cheesy, but ... whichever one I need at the time. If I've got my deluxe tinker or motorist on me (pretty much all the time), I know that there's a good chance I can do what I need to ... somehow. My most used are Main Blade, Scissors, Bottle opener/Driver and Awl in that order, but I hate being without the phillips or mini pliers as they've saved the day too many times.

I actually tried to think more specifically in terms of design/aesthetics/function, but couldn't choose between scissors (V91mm, W85mm & W65mm), pliers (V91mm W85mm & Swissgrip), main blades (74mm to 91mm), wenger can opener, vic magnifier, vic awl, V&W inline phillips, wengers locking drivers, mini (corkscrew) driver, V91 & V58mm combo tools, V58mm pen, W65mm mini driver, W65mm awl, W120mm saw, and vic scale tools ... it's like a parent trying to pick a favourite child.

The only other thing I can say with absolute certainty, is it's NOT the multipurpose hook or fish scaler

. I really don't have a favorite, I've used every implement on my edc SAK's at one time or another (even the hook). Two that see use everyday are the main blade for opening packages, breaking down boxes, etc.  The other is the 91mm awl, but not for its intended use so much. As a paint retailer my hands are constantly covered with God knows what, and I've found the awl to be perfect to get at stuff under my fingernails that hand cleaner and a scrub brush can't seem to ever get 100%.
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D
