My First SOG
on: May 07, 2011, 10:30:04 AM
...is a PPP. :D

The plier head is a work of art IMO, though I'm still not convinced how much I like having to open the handles so wide to grab anything with them.

Phillips seems good even though it looks slightly odd being the only cast tool amoungst all the other shininess.

Flat driver/cap lifter looks excellent though I've not yet given them a proper work-out.  Same goes for the can opener/small driver.

Serrated blade came just fine but the PE is a chisel grind and was pretty dull. :-\  Anyway a bit of time on a bench stone and I've got something workable, though given that SOG are a knife maker I'd of expected better.

Awl came sharper than the PE blade and works well, just be very careful about it folding back in use, I found it tends to collapse if you just get the axis of pressure just slightly wrong.

Is it bad to say that, other than the lovely plier head, the sheath is my favourite part?  Fab leather sheath IMO, just oozes quality.  :tu:

That's some excellent pics Gareth..  :salute:
There's no doubt other manufacturers could learn quite alot from SOGs leatherwork... :tu:

Cheers Allan. :)  I've now tried the can opener and, despite it's more than passing resemblance to Vic's, it's not very impressive. :-\

Your thoughts on the PPP are pretty much in line with mine Gareth :salute: Unfortunately you get some very important trade-offs with compound leverage. :-\

I do like how slim and Leatherman-PST-like the Pocket PowerPlier is though :salute: All the other SOGs start to get a bit big and unwieldy in my hands. :-\

Nice pics, Gareth! It's a beauty!  :tu:

I agree, SOG's awl is always incredibly sharp.  The awl on my Powerlock is like a mini Tanto knife.

Thanks chaps.  I'm not 100% convinced with the PPP if I'm honest, but it'll go in my EDC rotation and I'll see if it grows on me. :)

Is this the one you're thinking of modding then G-man?

I didn't really get on with the PPP myself, always go back to the Paratool though. Looking forward to seeing hoe the Powerlock compares too - fingers crossed the postie plays nice tomorrow!

Cool. I'm a fan of putting the 1/4" bit holder in - throw in an adapter for it and use the LM extension and bit kit.

Also, you could easily put a saw in instead of one of the blades... this is what I like about SOGs :)

Yeah, I was thinking about the 1/4" adaptor, large flat driver and probably the file, that way I could let my daughter play with it without it having any sharp bits on it. :D

It wouldn't be daughter-safe, but the serrated line cutter is a handy feature to consider :)

The serrated line cutter has been long discontinued unfortunately in favor for the v cutter, big step back IMO.

Wait till the first time you turn a stuck phillips screw though, undersized driver+teeth in your palm isn't fun. I bet a lot of people would be happier if SOG changed driver to #2 instead of #1.

The pliers on the new sog tools out of taiwan are so precise I am amazed. The original pliers are as tuff as any I have used. I really abuse my powerlock. Unfortunatly every other tool in the handles are inferior compared to leatherman and vic imo. I have tested the saw, scissors, can opener and drivers.

ouch! sharp stick.  Not sure if I can really capture this in a pic but the leather just has a good quality feel to it.  Nice and thick, but not too stiff.

That looks like a relatively new PPP too, with the pointy plier tips and button head screws. Nice! :tu:

I have been a Leatherman & SAK user for years and will continue to be. I have only recently discovered the 'SOG' and I am mightily impressed, hence the purchase of the S-62

My Powerlock arrived yesterday, an impressive peice of kit. However no sooner had I opened it the spring from the 1/4" Socket Drive flew off, not so impressed, may be this calls for a thin strip of gaffa tape to hold in place.
