I bought a PS4 yesterday
on: April 14, 2011, 02:33:32 PM
For the past few months I have been carrying my Vic Climber along with my Swiss+Tech Micro-Plus EX 9 in 1 on my keychain. I've become less than impressed with the Swiss-Tech. After using it several times I'm done with it. Of course I looked at Leatherman and saw the PS4. I figured with this, I could also drop the Climber as the PS4 had the tools that are most important to me anyways. Not that the Vic ever failed me in any way but my pockets were starting to get too full so I figured I could drop some weight.

I got it yesterday at Bass Pro Shops in Springfield MO. The pliers don't seem as "heavy duty" as the pliers on my Swiss Tech but they are a lot easier to use so I reckon it evens out. So now I'm gonna EDC this and see how it goes.

I was actually thinking about getting the PS4 last week but passed on it at the last second.  Yes, let us know how it goes as I'm still thinking about getting one.  :tu:

You know DTH,

If the pliers are a major issue, I'd suggest the Juice S2 (I'm assuming you want the scissors and too--not sure what needs to be covered from the climber).   Very small form, good pliers (much better than Squirt sized pliers), good knife, decent scissors and stubby but reasonable drivers (especially has that nice Juice Phillips driver).

If I didn't have a beater Kf4, that would be my favorite EDC Juice.  (The corkscrew on the CS4 is a snagfest)

Honestly, I've owned 2 different Juice models and neither impressed me too much. If I'm gonna carry that much weight I'll carry a Kick and have full size pliers and real tools.

For keychain option I went for P4 and VIC Manager...

IMHO that's the best lightweight and minimalist option...

Thought about PS4, but after done some researching discarded it in favour of this combo...

Now I have all (or allmost all):

Decent lightduty pliers
Nice file
Reasonable good set of flat screwdriver's (on P4 and VIC)
SAK scissors (can't beat those IMHO)
Regular philips screwdriver on VIC and 2dimensional on P4 which isn't quite capable IMO

And some more as in bottle openers, awl, tweezers, pen....

My P4 is missing in action, and although there were issues with the knife blade and file I thought the pliers were great so I can definitely see the appeal of the PS4 for you. I was very disappointed in my Juice, and it's destined for some very heavy modification when I get chance.

As for the rest of the tools on the P4, they weren't a patch on my SAK. I'm also lucky enough to be able to manage with SAK pliers for most day to day tasks, and have found the Deluxe Tinker to be an excellent choice for daily carry. I've always got a larger (fullsize) multitool nearby though, but seldom have to go for it to be honest. I also use a suspension clip for my SAK (and Fenix PD20) which eases the pocket weight and clutter.

Let us know how you get on with the PS4 :tu:

I usually carry a PS4 when I carry a larger folder like a Spyderco Paramilitary. The only issue I've had is that the Philips head is a little too small for some screws but that's very rare for me. I always have a full size multitool in my bag anyway.

Stick with the PS4 for a little while DTH it's an excellent little tool.  It's not perfect IMO but still hard to argue with what it can do given it's size.

The PS4 has an incredible weight to usefulness ratio. I'm surprised it's not more popular  The pliers while small are still very useful. I used them once to replace the battery in my car. Great little tool  :tu:

How exactly did they come in handy with changing a car battery?

Do you guys have loose/wobbly center pivots on your PS4's? Mine does.

Nope! My P4 pliers were great - but the file had bald spots and the knife blade kept getting hung up on the liner and damaging the edge about halfway down. Too much play/flex in the blade when closing it one handed

Had just enough purchase and leverage to loosen the terminal post clamps  :tu:

Mine is a little loose and wobbly but is still functionally adequate.

Mine had quite a bit of wiggle when I bought it but I sent it back to Leatherman and they got rid of it. Same story for the scissors.

So did you get the same tool back or did they give you a new one?

Can you just send it in or do you have to send in a reciept of purchase from who and when etc and all that stuff?

Im a bit worried because its a screw one and i dont really want it exchanged for a riveted one. Would this Australian mob have the resources to fix it or do they simply send it to the USA factory? I wouldnt imagine any LM's are built here and the Australian division is just an importer.

I'm not sure about Australia but if you sent it back to the outlet in USA you'd get back a riveted one :(

I recently bought a PS4 because I use scissors quite often. I think it is the best combination of tools and size for everyday business/office carry when complimented with a larger single blade knife.

If I am working outdoors or expect heavy duty need, then the Wave is carried and if it something between the office/farm the Juice S2 fits the bill.

In my opinion, no one LM tool (or SAK-for that matter) is absolutely perfect but the PS4 and a good 3 inch lockback knife is the best compromise I have found for 99% of my average daily needs.

It is a lighter combination than the SAK Super Tinker and 6 inch vice grips I carried back before LM ever came on the scene!

Well I've been carrying it for over a week and I'm quite satisfied. Now granted as I've grown older my "adventerous" lifestyle has waned but for a small MT to carry around the house and do limited repairs it has been great. I haven't tried to sharpen the blade yet so we'll see about how well I can do that but so far I'm pretty satisfied. I was carrying a Vic Climber II and a Swiss-Tech pliers on my keychain. The PS4 replaced both of them so not only have I saved weight but the pliers on this thing are completely superior to the Swiss-Tech.

So far, the PS4 gets a big thumbs up from me.  :tu: WTG Leatherman!!

I am going to downgrade to a P4 as i dont really like the PS4 scissors and the P4 has an awl.

I did a test on my PS4 today and i cut some wire off a paper clip about 60mm long with reasonably thick wire. I was surprised how easy it cut it. No mark was left on the cutters.

I didn't do too bad. I freehanded it with one of the Lansky sharpening rods and it came out acceptable.

I got a PS4 last summer and it was a nice little tool.  I gave it to my wife because she was feeling neglected because I was buying myself some new toys with the money I got from selling a bunch of extra textbooks I had.

At first I didn't mind, because the scissors are too small and the bottle opener is, frankly, sucky.  I've got a Style CS on my keys now and it's a good little tool, though I will admit I miss having the extra drivers and nicer file from the PS4; now I'm kind of wanting another one and will have to look at the P4 to go with my Style CS.
The first Noble Truth: life is suffering.  Only by accepting that fact can we transcend it.
