Skeletool bit question
on: May 14, 2011, 03:37:32 AM
Hello everyone,
Today I was playing around with some small multitools at a local store, and fell for the Skeletool. I've only had it for about 6 hours so far and am already plotting spending some money on it! Will the bits in the standard Leatherman bit kit and the bit extension fit the Skeletool, or is there a specialized set for the smaller LM tools? Thanks!

The Skeley takes LM's standard flat bits. I was going to say I do not think the 'older' bit extenders would work on the Skeletool but I just noticed this bit holder/extender on LM's web page  :o 8) 8) 8)

Anyone tried one out

Not tried that out but it might well improve the Skeletool IMO.  While I broadly like my Skeletool I'm not a huge fan of the bit holder, a bit fiddly if you need to change from flat to Phillips a lot and you have to use it with the handles open. :-\  It'd be nice if you could just slot the adaptor into the holder without having to open up the handles. :tu:

Or you could make your own. It's a five minute job and the cost is minimal.

Thanks guys. I think that the extension and bit set will be my next purchase. Can the extension be used on the Skeletool with the handles fully closed, or is it strictly a handle open proposition no matter how you look at it? And Enki, how did you go about making that? If it's not too difficult I might just give it a shot, though with my skills I'd probably just end up bleeding :).

Not difficult at all. I just used an angle grinder on a regular extender to thin it down so it would fit in the bit holder. Zed made some of these too.

As Enki says they are quite easy to do, you can use a grinder, belt sander, Dremmel  etc etc   :tu:

I can't find mine to take a picture but yes you can use your Skeletool fully closed once the adapter is in
Everything’s adjustable

Well, a bit kit is definitely going to be my next purchase, within a week or so. I'm going to see about making an extension, if not I'll just get the LM one. I have to say, even after only 2 days, I'm really liking the Skeletool. It's compact enough that I barely notice it clipped to my pocket, and I guess that's the whole point, isn't it? A tool you're not carrying is no use at all. Teamed up with a SAK, I can see this being my EDC tool. Thanks guys!

Its good you like the Skeletool. I was pretty sceptical at first but it gives you what you need for light jobs and you can adapt, improvise and overcome if you need to.

There is a slight gap and it will not close all the way with the adapter on as you can see...

Thanks for that pic, helps me picture the adapter/Skelly combo much better. I don't see that gap being a problem, I don't plan on leaving the adapter attached to it. I plan to keep the bit kit and extension in my bag to have it just in case.
