Brown Blue polishing paste usage
on: May 16, 2011, 05:36:03 PM
I bought a pack with blue and brown polishing paste in it (pgprofessional.it). They look and feel like hard chocolate bars.

I am using a power tool with a polishing wheel attachment.  You basically start it and then rub the paste on the spinning wheel.

It says on the pack to use the brown for pre-polishing and the blue for the final polishing of metals and that’s all.

I have had reasonably good results by using them as I thought best, based on their instructions. (after polishing the metal using 1200 grit sandpaper and some scrubbing pad – like material etc.).

However I am not really sure about the optimum way to use them.

Should I apply the brown paste, polish with that, then remove it and then polish with the blue, or should I leave the brown polish on the knife and continue with the blue.

Should I apply them with two different polishing wheels or the same?

Should I be gentle or rough? (with polishing...)

Do I have to use both or can I just use the brown, or the blue on their own?

Thanks to all the resident experts!

I am no expert but I would use two different wheels,
use the Brown on one wheel first
then clean the blade off!
then use the Blue on another wheel

It might help to think of the compound like wet an dry/sandpaper the brown is a rougher grit than the blue

Also I find you can load the wheel better if you warm the compound a little first (especially if your workshop is cold)

Hope this helps :tu:

Many thanks, I have one large wheel and a few dremmel size ones. I (would) tend to use the smaller ones for the brown paste and the larger for the blue. I just wish the instructions on the packaging were a bit more extensive.

Is there a way to clean the wheel? Using alcohol or soap? Scrape it off?

Just leave it for the next time you want to use it  :tu:

Unless you want to start again with clean wheels, compound feels like wax to me so maybe alcohol or white spirit will clean them

(I don't have to remind you to use safety goggles  :tu: )

I tell you, it does create a loooooot of mess when its working. I covered most things with paper and wore a mechanics style bue shirt and I still had to go around cleaning everything afterwards.  :D
