Lenox Gold Folding Utility Knife.
on: May 29, 2011, 01:49:48 AM
While at the one of the local tool shops, I came across an interesting folding utility knife.  It is a Lenox Gold locking tradesman utility knife...or so the title on the packaging proclaims.

What I found interesting, the blade has a titanium coating on the edge, and the package states "longest lasting utility blade...ever!"

Unlike my other  folding utility knives, this one does come with a few perks. There is a wire stripper built into the blade via a cut out...rather ingenious that. The screwdriver, pipe reamer, and bottle opener resides as a combo foldout tool in the rear section of the handle.

The blade is removed by a simple press of a button. However, the blade must be at a 45 degree angle to the body for this to work. Once the blade is straight and ready to use, you can press that button and it will not release the blade. This caused me some grief until I read the instructions on the back of the knife.

Just an aside , Lennox makes really good Bi Metal blades - very long lasting , actually worth resharpening . Good looking tool .

I agree with Chris, I have a box of these Lenox blades and they're pretty good.  The titanium does eventually wear off but they do hold an edge longer and better than other utility blades that I've used.
This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

Dang it Chako, you made me order one of these and a ten pack of Gold blades!   :D  Seriously though, this looks like a solid design, and it was just twelve dollars. Love the pry tool/screwdriver/bottle opener. I'm out of my cheaper "carbide" Lenox blades, so I decided to give the "Gold" a try.    I have a FRN-handled Kobalt that is really nice, and in addition to that wire stripper cutout in the blade carriage, it's got a cutout in the handle that serves as a seatbelt/strapping cutter when the knife is closed. And, since it is reliant on the actual blade of the knife, it's not a tiny specialty blade buried deep in the handle that is hard to find replacements to.

. I have the cheaper "carbide" Lenox blades, and even those last a long time--as much as a year with light use, and most definitely a few days of heavy work use, which often involves jobs like scraping and picking out caulk/glue with the blade.   I've had the carbide blades in my Kobalt and Gerber EAB; and with regular use, they're sharp after close to a year. I also have them in the retractable (and ancient--it was great-Granddads!) Stanley 10-099 I have; as well as a WorkPro retractable. These are mostly toolbox knives that don't see much use. I've gotten to the point I chuck the cheap blades from new utility knives and put in the Lenox.

I am also weak and almost succumbed to your foul temptation here and fondled one of these in a store too!
I decided not to buy it though and the strippers and other tool were one reason,I do not condone a nicked wire when stripping if I can help it and the stripper seems designed to knick to me.

But there was yet another model above this one in the line that I am likely going back for Tomorrow too!
This model has a flip out 1/4" bit holder that seems a lot more up alley overall and was a few bucks more and also had a bigger belt clip too.

So thanks for getting me out there anyway. :twak:
