Grail found!

Zippo Pocket Knife brand new in box for once local fire apparatus manufacturer American LaFrance (operated a plant in Bluefield Virginia under Figgie ownership from 1986 to 1994 that made about 150 trucks), who was bought by Freightliner and moved to North Carolina, then South Carolina after another buyout, where they went bankrupt in 2014, attributed to mismanagement by Lynn Tilton.    This knife "maybe" was offered by them when they were in Bluefield, but it was attributed on another board when I found out the knife existed, that this knife is from the '70s, when American LaFrance was owned by FWD.

Now to go find a knife, with advertising for airport ground equipment maker Charlatte, who currently occupies the former American LaFrance facility at 600 Mountain Lane, Bluefield, VA, which is their main American plant (French owned company).  Or even older, the mine equipment maker that occupied it before American LaFrance did.

Seller listed it months ago for about $20 or $25 shipped, kept relisting it weekly, then stopped for a while, then $15 shipped, then finally after a hiatus, $10 shipped, which I got it this time for.

There is more to the story.  What's the significance?

This was one of only four differentpocketknives and MTs American LaFrance had made, all likely in small numbers--this is the most common, it seems, so several more must have been made of it than the others.   This one, a German pocketknife, a SOG Pocket Power Plier, and a cheap no-name Chinese knife were the four.   They're very hard to find--this was the first one I'd saw, and the only one made with the Bluefield era logo, called the "Bar and Bird" by fire buffs.  and I almost bid on it when it was first listed. As a model fire apparatus collector, I've had them on my list since September, last year.

It's always good to find a grail, and even better when buying it doesn't wreak havoc on your "sharp'n'shiny" budget  :tu:

Good luck with searching for your other grails  :D

Hmmm.

a) My impatience got the better of me;
b) I found a good price by UK standards;
c) The pound is so weak that I wouldn't have saved much by waiting for one to appear on the forum from a US member anyway;
d) My old one has a slight scratch if you look really, really closely;
e) It's my money and I'll do what I want with it!
f) I won it in a competition.....

Which of the above do you think is the best "reason" to explain to SWMBO that I just splashed on a new TTi ?

 :P

Well definitely not d or e.  If you haven't already overused it so much that all credibility has been used up then f might (just might) fly  :pok:   :rofl:

A casio g-shock watch. With the features on it, it's technically a multitool. It's the G-9300-1ER Mudman

Tracking shows its out for delivery so should be with me sometime today (hopefully)

A fairly rare Schrade USA Old Timer 89OT "Blazer", which is very similar to the 8OT "Senior", but has a slightly longer, serrated blade in the place of the normal plain edge sheepsfoot.  It looks like a tiny bit of the clip point main blade's tip is broken off, but for $15 (compared to $60 for this knife in a Buy it Now listing) I can't complain.

Bought a beater Craftsman (Schrade) ST-5E Tough Tool from SteveC.   Needs some TLC, but one, having already repaired an ST-1 (which will likely end up getting cannibalized during the repair of the ST-5E), and the fact that Ellenville Schrade plant leftovers are so cheap, it should be easy and cheap to fix.

PS:  I frequently find blade blanks for pocketknives that are leftovers from the Schrade Ellenville plant marked "Craftsman", so why don't I find ST-5E handles with the tools installed, with the Tough Tool ST-1 handles with tools?  Because either Schrade hadn't been making them for a while at the time of closure?   The stock of them was exhausted a while back?
