Revamping a Billhook
on: July 11, 2011, 07:07:18 PM
As some of you know Tony exerted his evil influence on me and somehow I ended up with a billhook. ;)

While it's a nice piece it was also rather pitted and rusty. :-\

After drilling out the pin that secured the stub of old piece of handle that was still stuck in the socket it was time to start work on the rust.  Not too much work with a drill and wire wheel.

Once finish with the wheel a good rub down with some oil and it's looking much better.

Next up was a new handle, I had a nice enough piece of oak kicking around that was perfect for the job.  Quite a bit of work with a wood rasp and plenty of test fittings later and we have a nice solid handle.  Rather that put a pin all the way through the wood I decided to just go with a couple of wood screws to finish things off.

The edge is a work in progress, the pitting was right down on the edge and it'll take me quite a while to grind it (by hand) down to a totally perfect edge.  Still it's now sharp enough to cut wood (rather than just split it) so I'm heading in the right direction.  I've just stuck to the original edge bevels ATM.

The finished article.

Now I just need something to chop down.  ::)

Thanks folks. :)  Even my wife, who, while very supportive, isn't normally into my tools etc. said she thought it was rather nice. :D

Nice job mate   :tu:

I think the residual orange peel effect from the pitting makes it look better than a new one  :D :D

absolutely mate.  Gives the feeling that it's a tough piece of steel that's been around for a long time and is going to be around for a lot more.  Much more character than a modern piece, no matter how good the modern stuff may, or may not, actually be.

It's a rare day when I see a nice old piece of carbon steel I don't like.
Nice job, I'm sure you'll enjoy a good swipe or two with it.  :tu:
