The bottle and can opener
on: June 30, 2011, 07:08:01 PM
Do people use them that much? I guess not though perhaps some people do. True that they have to do with food (survival situation) and they don't take much space so maybe that's why they are always there on a lot of MTs. But the knife and pliers are able to take the can and bottle opener's job, respectively, especially in a survival situation when convenience isn't the most important factor (I could be wrong here).

Instead of can and bottle openers, for EDC I prefer a concave blade (pruner?), an awl, or perhaps a (gut) hook. What do you guys think?

I use a Vic can opener every day.  I open LARGE cans of green beans to supplement bulk in our dogs' food without adding calories.  Works great.  The small tip works very well as a Phillips too.

In the evening, I usually use an Atwood or PocketToolX for beer, but I also use the SAK bottle opener as well.

I knew at least one member on here used the can opener daily, and I try to use the bottle opener as often as possible  ;) There's far more chance of me wanting to get into a cold beer than do some gardening or open up a deer  :D

Awls are quite high on my priorities. Always like to have a general perpose pokey thing on me, but then one often lives on the backspring of the SAK anyway  :tu:

Hmm perhaps this also depends on the location. Here people seldom eat canned food and you can't buy bottled soft drinks. But beers, I think they still sell them in bottles.

When I mentioned gut hook, I was thinking along the lines of Charge TTI's hook. I can see that it can be useful to open packaging, warps, etc. especially when you don't want the knife to poke the content. Or if you need to pull-and-cut (a cable or something).

I use the bottle and can openers a lot, not only for beer and cans. :D If you go Wenger style you get a great locking screwdriver on the bottle side and a clamshell packaging opener on the can opener side. I think I opened more clamshells than cans with that thing. :D Also works great for opening boxes and slicing through tape when you don't want to gunk up your knife.

Hadn't thought of those other uses for the Wenger opener.  I'm going to have to give that a go.  :tu:

Excellent tip!

I have 5 cats , the can opener gets a work out , not to mention the odd philips screw . The bottle opener gets it's share - import beer , and stubborn twist off caps . Wouldn't be without either one .

I don't have in the house a single bottle opener besides the ones on SAKs and MTs, so I use them a lot. The can opener gets almost no use, as most cans sold here have "easy opening" mechanisms. Sometimes they broke however and in that cases the SAKs/MTs come to rescue.

While I hardly ever need a can opener thnaks to pull-top cans, both tools are a must for me. The can opener comes in handy whne the pull ring breaks off, and my dogs want their food, a bottle opener saves the handle scales of my knives when I want to open a beer or softdrink. I scratched quite some handle scales when I did not carry a SAK or MT in addition to my knife...

I'm starting to see a pattern here, can openers are for opening dog/cat food and bottle openers, beers  :drink: I guess that makes them pretty important indeed :salute:

Used the can opener today to open a can of beans for lunch, not used any other make of can opener on a multitool apart from Victorinox Cybertool and can't fault it.

The bottle opener is regularly used to open beer  :drink: I have used the bottle opener on my PS4 Squirt and it takes a few attempts to get it off, so I prefer to use the Vic, one attempt does it first time everytime plus I'm impatient when it come to beer  :gimme:.

Whenever i need to open a can or bottle, a dedicated bottle opener or can opener is always around. So I never use them on my SAK.

The drivers on the Vic can and bottle opener are useful, though.

I use both can and bottle opener a lot . We don't have a can opener at work so it comes in handy , plus I do like the odd bottle of beer too  ;)

I use the can opener fairly regularly. Just used the one on my Super Tinker to open a new can of coffee a little while ago. The large screwdriver/bottle opener doesn't get used anywhere even close to what it used to  :), but it's a great paint can opener and gets used as such every day at work.

Funny whenever I carry my charge I seem to miss my skeletool bottle opener. I can open a bottle with anything but the skeletool is the only one that grabs the cap.

I'm quite surprised that noone has agreed with me yet. I guess that indicates that they are indeed often used.

I've never once been denied access to a beverage or food because I didn't have a bottle opener or can opener. But I have been out with people and beverages where no one had an opener and I was constantly asked to open beers for others. It gets tiresome quickly. For convenience sake I give having a bottle opener a big  :tu:

The bottle opener gets used almost every day.  Back in my single days I never even had a proper can opener, just used the one on a SAK or Leatherman.  Worked just fine.

I find that "proper" can openers are more difficult to use than a SAK, and a heck of a lot more difficult to properly clean, especially with all of the gears.  :-X

My kitchen has a dedicated can opener for the very rare occasion that it's necessary. A bottle can be opened easily with almost anything. I would much rather have that tool real estate filled with something useful, like an awl, scissors, or even another flathead (at least I use those).

I will normally just open battles with a standard BIC lighter but I quit smoking so I don't carry a lighter anymore. Glad my C2 has a bottle/can opener.

We have some of the very large cans which our regular can opener won't open.  For those jobs, I use my Vic can opener  :tu:

I use the wire stripper notch on my Leatherman can/bottle opener semi-regularly.

I've used the can opener a couple of times for its intended use. Just this morning, I couldn't find the can opener in the kitchen. When I asked my GF, she threw my Tinker at me  :). "Honey, where's the can opener?" just doesn't work all that well with a dozen SAKs lying around. The can opener also gets used as a screwdriver and as a scraper at work. I don't drink anymore, so the bottle opener is another screwdriver and a great prybar/(paint)can opener.

To be honest, I dont own a can opener, besides the 27, installed on my SAK´s. So no need in buying one...
Same with a corkscrew. I broke every corkscrew in my inventory, even higher priced ones, the ones made by Victorinox seem to be made from Adamantium, as I yet have to break oe of these.

So, in short, all the openers get quite some workout..."offhewentgrabbingabeerandopeningitwiththecaplifter"
