What oil/lube do you use for your SAK's??
on: August 11, 2011, 02:31:47 AM
I know they're are a ton of different choices out there, so what do you guys use? Do you use a different oil/lube when you store your knives? I've got a small collection of alox soldiers now and I've always used "Break Free" which works great, but I don't know if that is the best choice when storing my knives. I did a search and didn't fine any helpful information.

Thanks in advance for your input.   :tu:

You can buy a big bottle of mineral oil from your food or drug store. The cost is not very much. Mineral oil is generally safe for human consumption and has been approved by the FDA in personal care and cosmetic products. The mineral oil keeps the knives lubricated and preserved. It has little or no taste and will not harm your food if it contacts what you are cutting. That's my 2 cents. ;)

I use mineral oil on all my knives and tools. I got a big bottle at the local Rite Aid for something like $4, and it'll last me a LONG time.

Hi, there's a similar topic http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,25172.msg455626.html
I still use mineral oil (I have the victorinox little bottle, but its the same) and ballistol, which is a german multi-use oil.

I use 3in1 oil. There's really not enough petroleum in it to hurt.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I use some nano-oil as well.  TBH though if I hadn't been given it I'd still be happily using 3-in-1, as Steve says I don't think there's even the slightest chance of doing yourself any harm, it's not like you're drinking the stuff.

You're right Gareth, before I got Nano-Oil I used plain, old Ballistol.

KY warming lubricant.  ;)

Seriously though, never had to use anything on my knives yet but I'm going with mineral oil when the time comes.

There are many good ones, but I still like WD-40.  The mineral spirits component loosens grunge and then evaporates, leaving a light mineral oil lube.  But just about anything from 3-in-1 oil to the more spendy stuff will do the trick.

Amici,
I use Rem oil, it's a little pricey but you get what you pay for.

Cheers,
Serge

I know this doesn't really matter, but the only lubricant mentioned by name on the Leatherman maintenance page is WD-40.
