Stab in the Dark
on: December 09, 2007, 11:21:54 PM
It's not often you see a thread about a knife in the Flashlight forum, but I thought this one was close enough!

I call this knife the "Stab In The Dark" knife because of it's unique ability to let the user see what he/she is stabbing in the dark!  Yup, it has a small flashlight built into the handle, and a clear plastic guard that lets the light shine through it and up the blade!

The light is also removable so you can see what you are doing when not stabbing things.  It takes two AA batteries and is about as bright as a MiniMag with the original incandescent bulb- bright enough, but nothing to write home about.

The handle is rubber molded over a plastic frame and is quite large, but comfortable.  It would be easy to hold this one while wet (Norman Bates Shower Scene?) or wearing gloves, and the steel is actually not bad either.  I haven't got a clue as to what kind of steel it is as it's only marked Orion (brand name) and JAPAN.  Whatever it is, it seems to take a good edge, but as I haven't used it much, I can't really say how well it holds it.

The sheath is a decent enough nylon belt sheath with snaps and straps to hold it in securely.  It holds the knife securely in place, and also has a small elastic pouch on the underside, where the sheath would contact your leg while wearing it.  I assume it's for a small sharpening stone, but there was nothing in it when I got it.

I got this one in a grab bag trade a while back- it was thrown in with some other stuff that I wanted and I got it too.  I didn't think I still had it until I stumbled across it today while looking for something else, which is usually the best way to find something you aren't looking for!

I've had it a couple of years already- it does a great job of sitting in a Rubbermaid storage bin in the cupboard!

Glad to hear I wasn't the only one with that attitude.  ::)

It does look like it would accomplish stabbing, though.

wow! if they ever remake that shower scene, or need a night stabber, we'll call you!
it does look interesting, if you get a chance, do some tests, like turn out all the lights
and cut some cheese or wienies (the food please) and let us know how it works at night :)

Perhaps I am merely spoiled by modern LED lights, or maybe it's because the old batteries in this aren't so good, but I'd really hate to have to rely on this light.  I'll see what I can do about using it after dark and get back to you!

You had to get the picture with my shower cap on huh?

I tried to sneak up on you ten times while wearing my usual Tilley, but the one time I do something different...

I uploaded a video of myself carving up a small piece of fudge with this knife, but we'll have to wait for YouTube to approve it...

The fudge was good!

I think I'd rather use a lantern or headlamp for kitchen chores in the dark, but it worked well enough I suppose.
