My first Opinel was a No. 9.  I have a couple now, counting the No. 9 Bricolage.  It's a handy size.

Those are some very nice looking and functional styling you did to your’s.

Are you aware that in March a group of us are doing a 30 day challenge with our OPINELS, sharing uses and pictures.
The challenge thread is here. https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,90877.180.html

It would be an honor and pleasure to have you join us and share your beautiful knives. 😉
Thanks for the kind words and invitation LC. I didn't know about the Mar'24 30 day challenge and have bookmarked the noted URL. That thread looks really interesting already. I only have a few select Opinel knives, all of which continue to serve very honourably and hope to post in due course. Cheers!

Any excuse to post a pic …
A repost from the edc thread and a patina on same blade before it started to wear off. lol …

Here you are my friend!  Bricolage sort of means Tinkerer in French.  It's a handy knife, with a Philips head and straight.  With a bit kit you're only limited by your imagination  :D

That's it LC!  I couldn't remember.  This is one of the first.  It's a good tool.  No. 9 is the perfect size for this sort of knife.

The blade shape caught my eye on an early web site visit.

Now I know the 9’s handle fits well in hand, the DIY model will be on the radar.

Since the wood handles (beech) were so luvly on the 9s that arrived I am planning to add another one now for my mod attempt to reshape the handle.

Darn that 2ndchanceGeorge, just wish I had his leather craft skills!  He did a few N09 projects besides his black Betty

I adapted one of my Opinel pocket sheaths for neck carry!

Added a paracord with break away connectors and secured to the red loop on the sheath.

Because the knife is so light, it is a great option for hikes, knife is more convient than attached to a pack or fanny or back. And easier to grab than in a pocket. 👍

Nice Opinel JonesE.  I have not seen that particular one either.

LC, great carry system for your Opi.  They are so light I'm sure its makes a great neck carry.

Here is my #8.  I modified it to be easy open.

I've got more than a few of the pocket knives but I use the pairing knife and the "brunch" knife far more often.  I will admit the fillet knife mostly takes up space in the kitchen drawer.  :D

I have read from others that they have kitchen knives from Opinel pedigrees.

Glad you make use of them.😉

My Filet knife is in the tackle box, but I could see it useful, in the kitchen, if I needed to remove the skin from a piece that was store purchased.

For kitchen duty my  wife had left me an assortment of RADA brand knifes, and  what came with storage blocks!
A few RDAs see use by me, a couple pairing styles. And then I do have a Buck fixed blade (like a 113) that can handle my serious items. Like, ribs, roasts, whole chickens, even carve up a turkey.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I picked up a new OPINEL no. 8 this week. I don’t know much about the wood. The handle is made of French Plane Tree. From what little bit I was able to find, the tree is native to Provence and Southern France. I believe the trees are planted as wind breaks along fields and towns. If you know more please feel free to share.

Opinels seem to multiply like rabbits.

Beech (wrong).

Yours is a special built, did not notice the high polish on the blade!  That is a super nice version!!!!👍😎

Most models with wood handles is Beech, a tight grain light colored wood prevalent in Europe. Also, used by Mora, but stained red.

Opinel uses a clear shellac for Stainless knives and apply a yellow tint when using Carbon Steel knives.

The difference should seen in this picture.

* IMG_5523.jpg (Filesize: 146.34 KB)

The Beech is a much harder wood than I expected, as I am reshaping a N09

They (Opinel) uses other woods and chard accordingly.
Oak, Olive (beautiful grain), Walnut (dark😁), are standards.   And, then I have read they use another type of wood if the handles are to be painted.

I gather some of this info from the Opinel web page. 😉

Nothing to add about the wood I'm sorry to say.  However I must say that is one very highly polished blade for an Opinel.   :tu:
