The only way that anything like this will ever stop is for decent citizens to get angry, stay angry, and demand that the authorities, powers that be ,or whatever act like they have a spine. That is truly one time when the ballot box is mightier than the sword.

I hate to say it, but a BFD security system would have kept that situation from happening.

Nobody ever got past mine.

We used to joke that the only reason he had a body was to move the jaws around!

I believe that an armed society is a polite society.  If that young lady would have been armed thismight not have happened.  I hope that those that are responsible for this crime caught by the wrong people by this I mean vigilanties that will beat them severely possibly all the way to deaths door and beyond.  A gun would be too painless in this case.

If the kids had the element of surprise, there may have been little to no time to draw and use a weapon.  That's when a dog comes in as significantly more effective than a gun.  The speed of a dog's reaction time would have meant that the invaders would have been attacked before they got through the door, and most certainly before they managed to grab the infant.  It would have also given additional time for the woman to assume whatever defenses she had available, be it a kitchen knife, firearm or even a handy lamp.

This is assuming of course that the dog, for whatever reason didn't raise the alarm as the kids approached the door in the first place.

And, as many of the folks who have been attacked by dogs will attest to, dogs will ignore bullets in an adrenalin dump making them that much more effective a defense.

While I worked in the jails I conducted an informal poll- inmates with a history of home invasions and break and enters absolutely never sent near a house with a dog, even if it was a toy breed.  Barking dogs of any size are a hazard most would avoid, and the toy breeds can inflict a very painful bite.  While big dogs crush, smaller dogs tear, which is infinitely more painful.

Dogs make a great defense no doubt.  I would believe that the key to getting through an ordeal would be to be more sneaky than the other guy.  I always have a tactical folder or firearm on even when I am at home.(if you are used to wearing it you dont notice it as much as when you need to carry it)  You want my money, here I'll give it to you BANG!
