Help me return to the fold
on: September 06, 2011, 12:06:37 PM
Hi
I am returning to the common sense world of SAK carry .I had sold my Champ,Climber and given away my ST I know I have roundly beaten myself for my own stupidity :D
I have narrowed my choice down to three 1 Vic Farmer  2 Vic Huntsman 3 Vic Climber I have a key ring classic for scissors but the Huntsman is edging out in front
I will appreciate any thoughts or experiences from people who have them

Farmer FTW. Inline awl and very low profile.  To me, it's the nicest SAK in terms of in hand experience.

Of the three you list the Huntsman is my favourite SAK.  Not for nothing is it the one Vic use on almost all their logo's. :tu:  Staying with the 4 layer idea, have you looked at the Wenger Evo 17?  Same tool selection as the Huntsman (though the small blade is swapped for a nail file) but the slightly shorter length does make it a touch more pocket friendly.

Or how about a Vic Mountaineer?  replaces the saw with a metal file; a more versatile tool for urban carry IMO.  Heck, I think I just persuaded myself that I need one. ::)

Have you been reading my mind? :D That were the two choices I wanted to suggest. The wenger evo s17 has a locking blade too. Or if you don't like the evo scales, there's still the original wenger forester model. And the Mountaineers metal file is one of the best I've seen on aa multi, better than Leathermans IMO.

I personally would go for the 'Climber' I tend to use this as my EDC when walking, with regard to UK anti knife law my trusty swisstool has to reside indoors [most of the time]  the 'Climber' is fairly compact and would suit most needs.

Having said all that, the LM micra is always on my keyring

Cheers:climber:

Climber is my sak of choice when I want my pocket on the light side.

For my uses it has the absolutely essentials:
- small blade (to open packages and cut stuff)
- big blade (when small blade is too ...small, also using it as a "teeth mirror" after I eat something :D)
- toothpick (in case "teeth mirror" shows something :D)
- can opener screwdriver (small screws / phillips screws / most of my daughters' toys screws)
- bottle opener screwdriver (mostly as a pry tool to lift and separate small things, also used on larger screws of course)
- tiny corkscrew screwdriver - added extra (to adjust the voltage on my ecig - also used at computer dip switches)
- scissors (to cut anything, from paper and wires to paracord)
- bottle opener (beer is good for you!)
- tweezers (very rarely used but they are truly useful after a bee sting...)

You should actually get 3 Vic Farmers, 2 Vic Huntsman and maybe 1 Vic Climber.    :pok:

If you think you'll use the saw, either the Farmer and a classic on the keychain or the Vic Huntsman as the first SAK of your new collection.   :tu:

Well I just had a deep thought and the first number I could think of was 42.  ;) As for the colour blue, see THIS POST.

You already have scissors on the Classic so Farmer is the one I'd say.

If you want a fraction smaller and still to have a saw then grab a Camper.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Ok, after a bit of MT.O trademark off-topicness back to the SAKs :D

My vote still goes to the huntsman, but you should definitely check these 3 SAKs too.
These are the size differences between the SAKs Gareth and I mentioned. Black one is the Wenger Huntsman, red is Wenger Evo S17, and the big one is the Victorinox Mountaineer. The first two have the same tools as the Huntsman, just a bit smaller + a locking blade on the S17, and the last one is the same size as the Huntsman, but it replaces the wood saw with a very good metal file/saw.

Welcome back buddy- I'd been wondering how you were doing these days!

As for what to buy, well I've two responses for you.  First, you know that whatever Vic you buy is going to be good, and two, you should know full well that no one here is going to help you shorten a must have list!

The wenger evo s17 has a locking blade too. Or if you don't like the evo scales, there's still the original wenger forester model.

And there is also the Security 17 (don't know if this is the official name  ). Basically an Evo S17 without the Evo scales. Mine is for sale if anyone is interested:
