That looks excellent, in fact it's very near to the Pulse II idea that some of us have been begging for.

I am a little worried that this might well be too fat for my taste though.

If it was all outboard tools I'd be there in a flash .... but it's not  :-\
C'mon LM - turn it inside out  :tu:

Funny you should say that Al. My son picks up my new SwissTool last night, opens the handles, deploys the pliers, looks at it and says: "Wait, how do you get to the tools with the springs in the way?:D

 Excellent!! I have the same problem with my new outboard Gerbers. They're Gerbers so I need to open it up to get the tools .... WRONG!! I went to the trouble of buying outboard tools so I don't open then up - and now have to open them AND CLOSE THEM to get the tools  At least I'm not trying to butterfly the Flick or flick the 700 (or at least not admitting to it  :-[ )

Seriously though - if this rebar was outboard it would be a real must have for me.

Leatherman ... I KNOW you're reading this ...

Same size ...
Outboard tools ...
(Fully outboard - no evil Ninja drivers ala Juice)
Same plier heads (replacable cutters) ...
Diamond file ...
SCISSORS ... remember the excellent ones you had on the old Wave & PST II...?
GREAT job on including an AWL  :tu: :salute:
 :pok: :pok: :pok:

Bless 'em, they'll get the hang of this tool making lark soon  >:D >:D >:D

Good looking tool though the Rebar (especially BO) but not quite what I'm chasing. It wouldn't replace any of my current (or incoming) LM options. I wonder what else they've got cooking?

I know it probably aimed at the hardcore users i.e. construction, Mr. Whippy, etc. but I think if this had Surge size scissors they'd have a real winner  :tu:

The scales have etched or painted rules on them, like the famous KF4 had.   :)

One beef I have though is with the awl. There is no hole for sewing.

Had to sew a boot out in the middle of no where while on my first wildland fire. We were in ash powder a foot to three feet deep and walking on coals. Two days of this and one of my boots' threading was melted on the instep area.
Had this three inch area where the lasting came off from the upper and the sole. Luckily for me that nagging feeling paid off, as I had a roll of government braided twine & a leather triangular S needle in my pack, along with a Super Tool.

If the awl had a hole for threading could of accomplished the task much easier without fear of breaking or having to pack a sewing needle. Still a good idea to carry one though!  ;)

Awled holes through the rubber, fished needle through lasting, the upper, then through the hole in the rubber. Then pulled the needle out, and made another hole. Reversed the process. Took the lunch hour but I was back in business and the boot never came undone the rest of the season.

When got home and took to a boot shop for repairs. Been carrying that same needle all these years (decades) since. And the thread.

A few years ago during the flood we were repairing tarps with the ST300's awl & thread loop, and even sewed some sand bags shut with it. That loops IS very useful in those situations where you least expect the need to use one!

Remember, though, that this is likely a prototype and there could be some changes before release. I would not be surprised if the threading hole is there eventually.

What I'd love to see is a comparison in thickness to a Blast.  I'm hoping the Rebar is a little skinnier.  :)

Well, if you can trust the depth in the pictures, it looks like it's about 1/3 thinner than the ST300. So I'm thinking somewhere around 15mm

Think we will ever see a Charge with an awl as OEM without having to modify it?

Have come up with a suggestion, as have sent it to Leatherman hoping the developers will consider it.

Quote from: Jackaroo Jim via Facbook Email
*** An Awlsome Idea! ***
For tools with a scale on the handle: design a liner lock, with a retractable awl and thread-loop that can slide in & out. Slide out with a smooth knurled surface towards the end of the handle, liner locks it into place. Press down then backwards to retract.

I know how displeased Juli was last year when I broke the Sidekick/Wingman news a day early (ninja skills are handy sometimes!) last year so I can only imagine what she's saying to a retailer this far in advance!

well having had a second look at the ST300 at the meet-up and confirming to myself that I just didn't find it very comfy in hand (too chunky IMO), then this really is very tempting.

Awl About The Awl

Even if a thread - slit - would be useful. Wider than the Juice awls have.

Same like the ST300 with inside implements and without scissors?  ???
I see a better idea - REBAR pliers on the Wave/Charge and the ST300 pliers on the Surge with Charge handles!  :tu:

I like it. :tu: The idea of a 4" tool with all the great features of the Super Tool 300 is a great idea. :salute:

I also love the detailing. They say the devil is in the details, and this tool appears to have plenty of subtle improvements throughout. :) For instance;

The recessed knurled screws. (see below) By dropping them down into these little pockets, the screw heads are no longer the widest point on the tool. I imagine this tool will be less "grabby" when being slid into a pouch or pocket than other similar tools. Great idea!

Also note the lock lever return spring appears to be about twice as wide as the Super Tool 300 or Core. We've seen more than one of these springs broken off on previous tools. (a turnsouth Core was the most recent one I can recall) Definitely a worthwhile improvement IMO.

The LEATHERMAN REBAR logo and ruler increments appear to be laser etched, instead of stamped into the sheet metal. This makes the markings appear dark on the stainless tool, and light on the black oxide tool. Better contrast on the ruler seems like a good thing to my old eyes.

Not sure if its a functional improvement or not, but I like the way the Rebar's lock lever cutouts are precisely contoured to match the lever when it is depressed. (compared to the lever cutouts on the ST300 pictured above it)

Lock lever depressed, fits precisely in the handle cut out:

I'm guessing this rivet means there is a "stop" fitting on the inside for the plier head to come up against, just like the Wave and Charges have. Wonder why they didn't put one of these on the Core or Super Tool 300?

And check out the way the handle channels are stamped out, with a curved shoulder to match the arc of the blades as they are opened and closed. Wow, that took some damn fancy die work to make the stamping come out that way. :o

(the wide area at the bottom of the handle channel is longer than the wide area at the top) I'll wager we won't be seeing an exact Chinese knockoff of this tool for quite some time. :D

In my experience, great details usually tend to be found on great tools. Kudos to Leatherman for the continuous effort to improve their game. :salute: :salute:

I'm with Bob.  I see it as a great improvement over the last line of that size ie blast, fuse etc.  I love my blast but I have always wanted removable cutters in a smaller tool.  I like the ST line but I find it too cumbersome for EDC.

I actually appreciate that LM is sticking with the format that made them famous instead of just trying to come up with radical new designs.  The all internal, folding plier design is my favorite, and it will come once again without Zytel!

I don't really care for the shape of the implements, they are too curvy for me.  I like the straight lines of the current tools, meaning files and saws and such.  Small issue to have that may not even be a big deal.  I'm still gonna buy two!

The recessed screw heads may make it all but impossible for owners to adjust their Rebar using a Vise-Grips or pliers.  I've been able to customize the feel of my Leatherman tools using this method after heating the screws to soften the thread locking compound.  Rebar owners might have to create a special tool as discussed in an earlier thread.
