Mid- Michigan meet up Update (very pic heavy)
on: September 13, 2011, 02:32:01 AM
Well, it was just me and Bob (and my family) on Sunday, but it was a great time.

We got there about an hour before the restaurant opened, and Bob and I found a bench under an arbor outside the Bavarian Inn. There were introductions, some good talk, and enough tools and knives between the two of us to choke a dinosaur.  :ahhh It was the perfect "tool talk" setting, as the town gradually came alive, getting ready for the day's festivities.

As we were just getting into the serious discussion of the finer points of our tools, my family showed up to let us know our lunch table was ready.

Here's a pick of Bob and my family at our table:

After we ate a wonderful German meal, we all headed off to Bronner's Christmas Wonderland. Our main goal here was to see the display of Victorinox SAK's, but sadly over the years, the once large display case that used to hold just about every Vic SAK in production, has been replace by a simple counter spinner containing only about twenty or so of the most popular models, all in red. :(

Anyway, not to be dissuaded, we set off to explore through rest of the building.

Here are some photos from inside the massive store:

Something to consider on these long shots, is that you are only seeing about 10% or less of the store...

Some photos of a couple of the Christmas village displays:

Each season a small section is set aside for decorations pertaining to the specific holiday coming up. In this case it was Halloween:

After some time I was able to locate the tool ornament section:

And there's even a section of ornaments for those who enjoy adult beverages :drink: :

After a while Bob and I took off to the parking lot where we opened out trunks and finished going through our tools and knives :tu:

All in all a very good time.

Yep, you definitely missed out Nate. Frankenmuth is a charming little town, one that I plan on bringing my wife and family back to and exploring at a later date. And the lunch we had at the Bavarian Inn was fantastic! I was a complete noob when it came to ordering german cuisine off the menu, but as usual when its about food, I'm a fast learner! :D After that we had a fun time discovering all the Christmas treasures at Bronners, as well as a bit of knife and tool play afterwards. The only unfortunate part was that we had to wrap things up so early and head our seperate ways, but hey, there's always next time to look forward to! :tu:

It could've been worse, Jie, Sevierville, TN has a couple Christmas stores - and a Christmas "Village," with store, restaurant, and hotel, that're open year round.  :ahhh

I was thinking the same thing when I was posting the pics. But the day was planed as informal, and mostly just for talk. Next time I'll set up some tool shots, and then next summer perhaps a meet with some tool activities somewhere.

No sharp & shiny shots. :-\ I brought along my camera, but didn't take a single photo. :-[ In our defense though, the setting was rather public, and there were a good many sidewalk shoppers wandering about. Not sure what they would have thought (or what law enforcement branch they would have called!) if they had seen Paul posing with his big Kershaw Zombie Slayer while I snapped his picture! :D :D

And besides, it not that big ;). Here it is next to a Core for comparison:

Looks like you guys had a good time.  If you decide to do it again, let me know.  My wife is always looking for an excuse to go to Frankenmuth :)

I promised the wife I'd take her down there sometime this winter. :)  We haven't set a date yet, but I'm thinking February or March, when hopefully I get a little break in my schedule.

I'd love to meet up again if sometime in there works for you guys :)

That would work for me Bob, I usually spend February and March cursing the winter, but I could take a break from that for a meet :tu:

Off the top of my head (haven't talked to the wife yet) how does Feb 26 sound to everyone? :)

Good here  :tu:

Note of interest: Being that we will be meeting at a time when being outside to tell tails, and try tools, would likely lead to a drop in core body temperature (or at least frostbite), we should nail down reservations for a private dining room in the restaurant as soon as we can.

Indoors in February is a good idea :salute:

Question: are we bringing toys and doing a full show & tell get together? Or are we just meeting up for lunch somewhere and having a nice chat?  (need to know so I can think about how to best sell the wife on the whole meet-up-with-my-buddies-while-supposed-to-be-spending-time-with-her thing!) :D

I'm good with either. Maybe you should sell her on the dinner with friends idea and we can all try to sneak in a few multi's :D
