Wanna see my package?
on: December 24, 2007, 09:16:55 PM
I just got this package in the mail from Marc at www.EDCDepot.com this afternoon from one of Santa's Postal elves!  I have an interest in rescue tools and so I thought I would check these three out from Benchmade.  I've done little more than take them out of the package and photograph them, so don't ask too many questions yet, but I will be pitting them against the other rescue type tools I have in my collection soon!

I just thought I'd let you guys drool a bit first!

You and Dunc ought to co-author an article on rescue knives :), between the pair of you I think you've got all the ones worth having :)

They certainly seem like decent tools so far.  The big yellow one has a glass break in the butt, and a small LED built into the handle.

I don't know if Dunc has any more than I do- I have the SwissTool RS, the Boker RESCOM, the INOV8 ResQMe, two Victorinox Rescue tools, and maybe some others that I can't remember...

Don't forget the Gerber Hinderer rescue knife/tool
http://www.gerbergear.com/product.php?model=1534
Between you and Dunc..there should be enough rescue tools to have a thorough showdown and reviews.

Maybe I should talk to my contact at Leatherman about making a Warhammer multi and see how long you last!  :pok:

I was looking at the Hinderer too- I have a project on the go that I need a few more tools to test out and that one is definitely on the list.

One thing I like about these rescue tools that you don't see often elsewhere is the handles are always high visibility colors.  I'd love to get a day glo orange Charge or a bright yellow SwissTool- something to break up the monotony of the various shades of grey and black we get now.

The Juice series always struck me as more "trendy" colors than useful ones.  The yellow and orange models aren't particularily bright- not when compared to the Victorinox Rescue tool, the orange Gerber, the yellow Benchmade Rescue tool etc.

I'm all for that!

The Salt though seems more like just a regular folder with fancy colored handles as opposed to an actual dedicated "rescue" type tool.  Do you think that it would fare well in this category?

I suppose I could also toss in the Victorinox OH Fireman as well since it has the curved belt cutter blade.

I think the Salt would stand up very well . I chose it because of its shape and features rather then it having " rescue" in the name .
Its very easy to open one handed even with thick gloves on . Blade has rounded blunt tip plus yellow handle makes it easy to find . I know theres no glass breaker but it unlikely this will ever need to smash a window where I take it  . While on the subject of glass breaking  :D a sharp tap at the corner of a window with a swisstool or similar multi will have the same effect , this only applies to toughened glass which is the stuff that bursts in thousands of tiny pieces . Laminated glass is a different matter , this is two sheets of glass bonded with a clear sheet of plastic between them , so when it breaks the plastic keeps it together ( car windscreen ) . This is where the Vic rescue glass saw comes in , its not as quick a solution then kicking the windscreen out with your feet though .

I have looked at the EZ Out but my budget is only so big! :P

Yeh the Atlantics handle is FRN . What surprises me is how solid the lock up is . No play at all .

Glad to see everything arrived.  After shipping off your order I though about picking up one of the Benchmade Rescue Hooks for my car, but I spending $1,000 on my doggie at the vet I have to hold off.  I'm looking forward to the reviews.

$1,000 at the vet?  I hope the dog is ok!

I'd have to say that having just looked at and played with, the Rescue Hook seems like the best of the three but time will tell.

Ahhhh!!!  Sand People!!!

You know... why is it that the Sand people are said to be such crude and horrible shots... but in Episode 1 they can hit a freaking pod racer doing 899000 miles an hour...

But in Episode 4... When they're looking at that shot up Jawa vehicle, Obi-wan talks about how the Imperial Storm Troopers shoot with such precision... but then they can't hit a damn thing for the rest of the series???

Sorry for the extremely off topic Star Wars rant...
