Knife and tool sharpening

While a lot of us can sharpen a knife, it is something of a dying art these days and it's very hard for the apprentice knife nut to get reliable information on how to maintain the edge on there blades, there are a lot of so called experts out there, who offer bad advice that, will wreck your blade within moments

So please feel free to leave you tips, advice and any links to knife tutorials

I'll add more when I've got time...

for tougher jobs I use a 1x30 belt sander, but for most jobs I use the sharpmaker, fast and easy.

A mate of (he's a bladesmith) does the same thing, I just look on in horror, I know he know's what he's doing (the quality of his work is stagering) but it just go's against the grain for me

I know what you mean, and I have thought about it. I think the temper temperature is around 400 degrees
and to get even close to that is pretty hot for fingers! If my knives edge can't take some heat, I don't want it!
but you make a good point, you need to be wary and careful.

Ive heard that if ur low on materials u can sharpen a blade on the bottom of a ceramic cofee mug

Any rough ceramic or glass surface will work in a pinch.  Coffee mugs and the edge of a rolled down window in a car are often cited as useful sharpeners when nothing else is available.
