Anybody done a functional plier spring mod?
on: December 27, 2007, 03:01:50 AM
I'm thinking something similar to the spring-loaded system on the SOG CrossGrip/CrossCut. It seems like it would work fine with a butterfly system like most of the Leatherman tools. What would be a good medium to use as the spring? I figured that I would use a lot of excess material, pound three nails into a piece of wood and then bend the material around the nail anchors before fitting it to the tool. I have some extra battery contact springs from old Surefire lamps that look thick enough to work.

The sliding plier Gerber tools have potential too, I just haven't thought of a way to drill/cut a relief to fit the spring into the rear of the plier assembly.

What say the modders?

Making a proper spring is more art than science.  :-\

Starting with the proper grade of steel is critical. Am I understanding that you have a suitable piece of springsteel wire then?

I think I have a good piece but saying that alone may mean I have the wrong thing. Anyways, I'm making my little jig this week and will bend it when I return home next week.

I dont know if it will work because of the larger handles of the larger tools.  That spring has to be really tough.  Good luck man.
