Man I love wireless!
on: January 09, 2008, 04:56:10 PM
I was online half an hour ago in my car in a parking lot of a coffee shop.  Now I am parked on a sidestreet downtown- I think I am connected to a coffee shop again, but the businesses here are so crammed together that I'm not certain who I am connected to.

My home service provider offers wireless browsing at a decent price, but it looks like I can connect in enough places that I may not ever have to worry about it!

The best part is, I am not even having to try and crack into any networks- there's enough unsecured networks and hot spots that I don't have to try.

Not that I ever would do something like that...

Thankfully, I've got plenty of clients who don't even know what defrag or a folder/directory is. There's so many unsecured wifis around me; I'm not surprised. We actually have libraries that are open hotspots. Nowadays people are used to it but if you think about it, being able to use your laptop almost anywhere (given elevation, foliage, etc) is pretty damn cool!  :)

Yeah, it's pretty shocking how many people don't secure their wireless connections. Shouldn't access them though, there's been several arrests publicised from people doing this.

I want to convince the folks that run my bar to install a wireless system to become a hot spot- would increase the lunch and afternoon traffic as business customers are more apt to come in.  I wouldn't access it with my laptop when at work, but my PPC is in a pretty tough case and might survive!

Been there, done that, got the street cred.

One day, roughly 6 months before we find out the relevant technology causes tumors, there will be "Nodes" placed all over the Country (that's MY country, everyone else's country(s) can go to hell in zamboni-cart.) every four perche carrée or so. I figure the country is 8 million square kms, and each unit will cost $100, so for just shy of one billion dollars, we will have wireless internet for all!

It sure as hell beats building another bio-warfare lab public hospital or child restraining zone school.

Stupid question guys- how safe is it to "cheap out" and create a wireless hot spot in a bar by just getting a good wireless router and installing it?  I don't know how popular it would be at my bar so I'd like to maybe try an inexpensive test first.

This seems like a nice little article about wireless networks in a business setting, some good reading on there.
