What's Your Rub On Black Oxide
on: October 19, 2011, 12:57:50 AM
Just a method I use on new BO tools, and maybe a tip for some or open to  better or quicker ways from others for getting the light coat off before getting it all over what you're working on and/or your hands. And before I hear any awww, don't want dirty hands, after 30 years of loading, hauling and unloading dozers, rough terrain cranes, huge transformers, 120' poles. etc., in ALL kinds of nasty weather, I don't care to get filthy if I don't have to. Too many nights and days getting undressed in the garage so I don't trash the house: I'm sure many of you know what I mean. Anyway, I have some pre moistened Break Free towels that I wipe the tool with, then dry it off with a cotton towel. Gets the towel really black, but doesn't hurt the finish and seems to set the coating, I guess the equivalent of using your bare hands for a week or two. I then use a few drops of Coon P synthetic oil on all the pivot points and it's good to go. I have BO MUTs, STs, PSTs, and now a Wave, and it's worked very well on all of them. A little time consuming, but worth it to me. I'd try a quicker method if anybody knows of one, but if you don't give it a try.

When I've received a new BO tool, I'll wipe it down real good with a rag or whatever to get that loose surface layer - or whatever it is - off of there.  But your method sounds better.  I don't dig getting that stuff on my hands for the first several days of carrying it.

I recently bought a new BO ST300, and it looks like Leatherman now seals their black oxide tools before they leave the factory.
