GB compared to Wetterlings
on: March 08, 2010, 03:22:32 AM
For those who have handled both Gransfors Bruks axes and Wetterlings, was there a noticable difference in handling/edge retention?

I've noticed that GB is about double the price of Wetterlings

Wetterlings are good, honest working axe's :)

Granny's B's are just perfect axes :)

They both do a damn good job, but the quality of the GB is definetly better imo :)

I have a Wetterlings and have read the only major difference is in the finish (edge, profile)

to get my Wetterlings as nice as a GB you need to do some work, but once there they are both darn good and similar.

GB now owns Wetterlings now anyway, but I hear they are keeping things the same. (for now).

Amici,
IMHO Gransfors Bruks are truly wonderful axes. These are hand-forged from a Swedish steel specifically engineered to temper the blade of the axe to the correct toughness. Each axe is then stamped by it’s forger, for example mine was made by lp (Lennart Pettersson).

SAW aka Wetterlings are nice, but they do require allot of touchup once it arrives as in reprofile the edge, straighten out the bevels, realign the head, and of course, linseed oil the handle.

Hence why you see the price difference between a Wetterling and the Gransfors Bruks..

Cheers,
Serge

I thought GB made both hand forged and drop forged heads? (priced accordingly).

I watched them being made at an exhibition and it was fantastic. Beautiful finished product

Wetterlings certainly are a good tool for the money though and well worth owning if you don't want to spend the extra cash.

Nuphoria,
Now that you mention it, I believe that they do.. Although I'm still a Lee Reeves double bit man, GB still takes a sweet second place in my book..

Cheers,
Serge

I have a GB wildlife and I love it the fit and finish is perfect and it came super sharp. From what I have heard both GB and Wetterling are pretty much across the street from each other.
