Poll

What do you reckon to Leatherman's new Wingman marketing stratergy?

What's a Wingman?
Wingman is my Bro!
The eighties called and they want their advert back.
Its about as appealing as a load of dingo's kidneys.
Pure class.

Middle option for me. It's campy, sure, but lame. I don't like it.

I like this ad campaign about as much as Accujohn does.
I will say I have emailed and spoken with a couple people at LTG, and they recognize the deep hatred many of us have for this new campaign.  No word on if they are going to keep this thing going, or end it early though.

It's not simply that I don't like it (because I really don't like it), but as a Leatherman guy, I'm embarrassed by how bad it is. :-[

Firstly, THANK GOD a Brit stepped up and started a proper poll.  :salute:  I've tried starting polls before, and let's just say, it wasn't pretty. :-\

Secondly, Bro?  Who uses that term?  (Although if the Wingman had a Tazer function, the term Bro would possibly be appropriate...).

Thirdly, didn't corporate America learn ANYTHING from the Creepy Burger King ad campaign?

Exactly... Although I give the BK King points for at least being disturbing or creepy as opposed to just being stupid. Its what happens sometimes when a marketing person gets something in their head then convinces everyone that its hilarious and will sell a zillion tools to people who think stupid sells. Maybe it would be different if it were funny, in some way. And if it does sell a zillion tools to a zillion bros, more power to them and I stand corrected. Doesnt make promo better tho :)

I'm not in the marketing business, so I won't pretend to know if it's a good or bad move as far as sales & such... But it sure isn't working for me. I'll admit to a few chuckles from the ad, but overall it's not at all the image I want to be attached to.

I am actually a marketing person, but that doesn't make my opinion worth more than anyone else's. Like I've said, if it works then more power to Leatherman. I just dont get it though. Sometimes you can deliver an intelligent message in a funny way. Is that maybe what they have done? Is it the kind of thing that makes you laugh but has an impactful "punchline" that still says something smart about the product? To me, the whole thing just seems silly with zero depth. I'm glad they dont want to take themselves too seriously, but at the end of the day they still need their company to look smart. It is an incredible product after all. Ok, im done :)

I like it. It reminds me of the Old Spice ad campaign.

You can be cheeky and not slide into mockery. The Wingman campaign (Like Old Spice) accomplishes this.

I think it's well made advertising, especially the bromiga 2000, but Wingman is not my bro.

I suspect that a forum like this isn't a good data point for the marketing folks. I believe we'd be seeing just as much talk here about a campaign that we all thought was great.

As for this current Wingman adverts - their message has escaped me. If I weren't already inclined to look at any new Leatherman tool anyway, this campaign wouldn't give me any reason to look at a Wingman. Not that I hate it ... it just isn't clear to me why I'd want to find out any more about what they're advertising.

I gave it a positive vote, its amusing enough, I don't take the identification of MT carrying men as '70s action heroes as an insult, as they lay the silliness on so thick. I think I would rather be identified with a lobster though.

I'm as disappointed with their advert as I am with their new pinch-cut wirecutters.  Lame.  That said I am debating getting a wingman simply to experience it.

I was going to make a joke about only buying two Wingman's, where I was going to buy three but this ad turned me off :D

Then I started thinking about a serious question:

Do you all think that if this ad campaign gets widely popular, (especially if it becomes a big joke to the general population), will it effect whether or not you want others knowing that you carry a Wingman?

Well considering the fact that the majority of the general population probably wouldn't know the difference between a Wingman, a Powerlock and a Victorinox Spirit, if it became a big joke to every guy in the street it wouldn't matter which multitool you carry. It would not stop me carrying multitools though - I'd just stop using them to help anyone who was being an arse  :D

Instead I'd turn the joke back on them and tell them how I could fix it really easily and rub their noses into how much they are now inconvenienced before laughing and walking away - or worse - laughing and NOT walking away, just watch them struggle  >:D

It would however make me think about which company made me the butt of any jokes in the first place and how much of my money they weren't going to get  :twak: :twak:  :P :D :D

Out of those here who did NOT like the ad campaign, how many are UNDER 40?

I'm guessing almost none.  My point is that LM is advertising to a younger market on the Wingman. It makes sense to me given the Wingan's price-point.

You want to loop in younger buyers because once men become loyal to a brand, they stick to it. Men are big on brand loyalty, so get them young.

Me  :tu: You think they're aiming at a specific demographic with this? What is it?

BTW - judging by the poll it might be easier to ask those who DID like it how old they are

I've just realised ... you know how LM look in on this forum for feedback and ideas (as we already know) .... and Team MultiMoe are about to start their Moevember campaign .... there's a chance LM could think they're onto a winner with this muppet as it's setting a trend and do more of the same  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
