Duncs Holiday Picture thread

This year we went around 250 miles North to Yorkshire. I've never been to this part before and I was keen to visit some places on the Coast .

The first place we visited was Whitby . I've recently been reading a book about a famous Whitby lifeboatman call Henry Freeman from the mid to late 1800's and I was keen to see where some of his heroic rescues took place , a lot of which involved sailing ships running before storms to try and gain access to the safety of the harbour mouth . You can imagine how much I enjoyed the pleasure boat trip out through the Harbour  :D Another interest at Whitby is the old Abbey which also gave inspiration to Bram Stoker who wrote Dracula while staying in the town .

Just a few miles to the south there is a place called Robins Hood Bay and despite being small it was once the biggest smuggling port on the Yorkshire Coast . It is said that a bail of Silk could be landed on the beach and could make it all the way to the top of the village without seeing the light of day due to the network of smuggling tunnels .The sea was nice and lively and the whole place had a lovely atmosphere about it .

Now we move onto the Railway . We boarded the Train at Pickering and visited Grosmont and Goathland which was the setting for the British TV Drama Hartbeat and the Station was also used in the First Harry Potter Movie ,

Great pics Dunc  :tu: Robin Hoods Bay is one of my favourite places for a quiet weekend getaway. I'm hoping to do the 200 mile Coast to Coast walk next year which finishes there

Scarborough too eh? You got some good historic seaside towns in that trip mate - and some of the best fish and chips the UK can offer :tu: I've never been in that lifeboat station TBH, but Scarborough has only ever been a day trip for me in recent years.

The walk from St Bees to RHB is supposedly 190miles over 14 days but I reckon in reality I'd end up doing 210-220 with impromptu diversion (i.e. getting lost)  :D

Great pics Dunc. Never been to Whitby and always wanted to. Thought it might be fun to go there when all the goths are in town just to observe :D

The goth weekends are great in Whitby. A friend and I sometimes go to sell verious chain mail/ leather stuff. Some of the commissions we have done are best described as ..... Interesting.

I love robinhoods bay. The bay hotel has a great relaxed atmosphere in the evening, watching the sea.  Although the walk back up the village is killer.

Scarbrough will always be holidays from my childhood. Went this year with my own children and I have to say nothing much has changed.

I enjoyed the photographs very much Dunc.

It just amazes me how people tend to build on top of each other like that.

So that's what the Hogwart's Express does the rest of the year!  :D

Looks like you had a great time Dunc!  Beautiful scenery, although that castle does look a bit drafty!

Thanks for sharing your holidays with us Dunc :) I must say none of your pictures could be mistaken for ones shot in my area. The building construction and the waterfront scenes are altogether different here.
