Is that the new ti bolt action pen?

I used to be into mechanical pencils when I was in high school and college, then started using pens more and more. Lately I've been doing more abstract work than usual (I'm a software engineer) and having to draw lots of diagrams to make sense of things; slow-drying gel ink is no good for this (and I typically use 0.7mm tips so it's pretty thick). So I looked around and found out about the Uni Kuru Toga engine pencils. And now... oh wow do I love these things. Flattening the lead was always my biggest problem with mechanical pencils, these solve that problem completely. The Kuru Toga system rotates the lead slightly every time you release pressure on it. So after every letter, it turns 1/40th of the way around. This keeps the lead point consistent, no more flattening out, no more twisting the pencil in your grip to get a fresh tip. You can write a whole page of notes, drawings, whatever and all the lines are the same thickness. It's brilliant. I originally got the "starter kit" from Office Depot which is the cheapest (about $6 US). Of course, now I have a Roulette and one of the newer Slide Pipe models (which rotates twice as quickly to better handle soft lead). I'm really looking forward trying those models out.

As for pens, as I mentioned I usually stick to gel ink. I prefer blue to black, simply because it's easier to tell the original document if you photocopy something. I like the Pilot G2, Pilot B2P, and Uni-ball Signo UM-151 (the capped ones).

I've seen those pencils you reference.  Those are very cool.  I switched to blue for the same reason you not tho I've been known to write in green as well.  I don't work in an office so any color actually if fine for me. 

There are some wonderful writing implements on the market.  If I used a pen or pencil as part of my job I'd certainly have something nice.

    I'm the same I'd rather have blue ink over black, not is it my fav color but it's diff and like you said, you know it's original. I've been after a new pen for pocket carry for like over two months, I just couldn't find that right one. Yet I'll probably be ordering one tomorrow, so simple and looks perfect for pocket carry. On top of that the ink cartridge is the same of a bic, so to switch over to blue all you have to do is cut it to fit, pretty simple if you ask me.

Oh and I spoke with the owner of the company, he's also thinking of making a attachment that will snap on the other end when it's close to make it a keychain carry..

After just a day of having mine, it's the favorite of the three. The weight is nice, the knurled grip is great, and I actually like the slower 1/40 rotation better. The retractable sleeve on the Pipe Slide is nice, but the lead wobbles more.

What size lead, back when I used to do drafting this was my pencil, everyone else was using like a .5 or .7 or even a wood pencil and their lines would be thin at one end then fat at another, while my lines were thin allll the way through since I was using a .3! The only thing is you had to get used to such a thin lead and knowing how much you could push cause that lead snapped very easy! Another trick was as you were drawing the line you rotated the pencil, that way you kept a sharp tip all the way around..

The 5 I use most of all at work, top to bottom...

A good old Bic 4 colour pen. My go to for meetings, so when I get bored I can do really colourful doodles.
Pentel graphgear pencil with 0.5mm HB pentel lead in it.
Pentel graphgear pen with black needlepoint refil in it.
Parker jotter with black quinkflow fine tip refil.
Parker jotter with red quinkflow medium tip refil.



 

That bic four was one of my fav, that was until I found this guy. The bosses used to love what I did, every morning I had to do a unique inventory, some one went up and down every aisle, and if something was missing it got scanned, and we got handed a sheet, now the fun part, you had to count how many of that item you could find, if could fill it, you did and mark if the total if it was the same, if not you had to mark that you couldn't and mark that it was a neg, so I would mark either
check/- this way when the boss looked it over and did a quick check he just looked for the red and was done twice as fast,

Really nice selection there.

I just use Bic, Faber-Castells and Paper Mates... I don't really feel the need for a fancy pen, and since I'm also prone to losing them, I'd rather lose a cheap pen than a expensive one that I would probably get bonded to and etc.

My first Fountain pen, a Lamy Vista with 1.1mm Italic nib. 
I went with it because the shop had no pilot metropolitans or pluminix or similar. And it looked nice!

Got it at the pen shop in Dublin, and for a really good price considering.
25 Euros, that includes the Converter(usually 4 or so euros) and Italic nib(all the websites I've seen charge an extra 4 euros or so for it... )
I was expecting a 25-50% store markup, so a pleasant surprise. 

Just uncertain about one thing, can you FP veterans tell me if the ink flow/line thickness looks correct for the nib? Seems pretty wet to me, but that might just be unfamiliarity with fountain pens.

Nice pen! That ink looks normal. Just remember, if you are writing in a notepad or something similar, be sure to let it dry before closing.

The ink is usually dry in 10 seconds. 
I'm mainly using loose A4 pages with a printed dot pattern, kept together in a card folder. Mostly due to the size of my handwriting with this nib.
The X-height seems to need to be a minimum of 4mm for the writing to look good with this nib, and so, if I'm doing them right, the 'f's are 12mm high!
Do you use any italic nibs?

I dont. Just the regular nibs. Which I can't remember the actual name is.

To me it sometimes feels like the ink will flow differently depending on day. My guess is that it depends on a number of factors including how much/little it has been used recently as well as atmospheric pressure and paper quality. The paper quality is very noticeable if you ever try solving newspaper crosswords with a fountain pen but the difference between two different papers can be quite important otherwise too.

Good point 42. I forgot to mention paper quality. Some papers will bleed badly and suck up alot of ink.

I need recommendations for my second fountain pen! 

Two requirements:
Under 30 Euros(still figuring out what I like) and needs to have an extra fine nib available(or fine, if the manufacturer is Japanese, like Pilot).
Short length is nice by the way. 

Heres what I looked at:

Kaweco Liliput with EF nib: Love the size, but too expensive for now.

Kaweco Classic Sport with EF nib: Seems like a good choice, but on the fence about the cap shape.

Pilot Metropolitan with Fine nib: Makes the thinnest line of anything I looked at. 
Brass body is cool, nevermind the lack of shortness.

Pilot 78g: Same nibs as metropolitan, and effectively a cheaper plastic metropolitan, so don't see the point of it. 

Parker Jotter: Does not seem to have an EF nib option.

So thats about it. Can you help me choose from the list, and/or suggest other pens?   

I've got the Kaweco Brass Sport and I don't find the cap shape to be an issue at all. Plus if you don't have the pocket clip on it stops it rolling away

Thanks for the recommendation. 
The reason I'm on the fence regarding the cap is aesthetics, not functionality.    Silly me. 

If you can pick up a Pilot Birdie that would be in line with short and extra fine nib. They are out of production but can be picked up from between 10-15$

I'm a big fan of mechanical pencils as well.

....although wooden pencils are fun to sharpen.....with a SAK.
