The thing about scissors

What is this thing about scissors? How come so many of you cant manage with out scissors? You are al handymen who knows how to handle a knife. So why, if you have access to a knife, do you need scissors?

I don't think it is the fact that some of us can't manage without them, but there are some tasks that are much easier and safer to do using scissors instead of a knife.

Try to cut your fingernails with a knife...or those nasty hairs, residing in ones nose ;-)

Seriously, better have it and dont need it, than need it and dont have it...

Some task are just more appropriate and safer with a pair of scissors. Like said above try and trim a nose hair or stray beard hair with a knife blade.  :tu:

The problem with bringing up the scissor question is that now we get to hear all the nasty little personal hygiene details. We need a separate TMI thread. Just use your imagination and answer your own question. Then go back to pulling your nose hairs out with pliers :)

I must have scissors.  They do things that a knife can't(at least not safely), and they take up minimal room.  They are a must for my EDC, and always will be.

I could open my bag of M&M's with a knife, but scissors give me more control.  I wouldn't want to drop a single M&M.

My teacher handed me a pair of scissors in kindergarten, haven't looked back since.

I tend to agree with this. :pommel: I don't have anything against scissors, and they sure can come in handy at times. That said, I don't even keep a pair of scissors in my "real" tool box, so I never really feel under-tooled without them. Of course, I don't often use my tools for personal grooming, so that probably has a lot to do with it too. :D

A while ago I had to cut some tape while on a bumpy bus. If knife is all I had I may have some extra holes on my fingers after.

If in a public place using scissors where possible causes you less hassle than going all crocodile Dundee.

Because Leonardo knew... :D Think of all cutting tasks where you'd use a cutting surface (wood, etc.) to do a precision cut. Now image doing the same cut in a confined space where that is not an option ("cut the red wire"-type), and you'll love your scissors. ;)

If I have a choice between using a knife and scissors and I have both on me, I will choose the scissors almost every time.  There are certain tasks I just don't want to attempt with a knife such as cutting my fingernails.

I like scissors, but I like serrated blades, or a saw, or a file more.  I guess that's why I don't mind carrying a ALX much of the time.  I keep my blades razor sharp most of the time, so can usually get by, but when I do have scissors I find myself using them quite a bit.  The old wave had wonderful ones.

That's the one thing about the blast that I can think of that needs improvement, a serrated blade.  I love'em but I can't find a MT that works for me better than the blast.  I use it's scissors all the time.  I think when the REBAR comes out I will have to start searching for a good keychain tool with scissors.  I love the micra but it isn't the best fit for me.  Maybe just a rambler or minichamp would do.

Good sharp scissors are a necessity for me. A "Must have" for the new breed of fishing line, also for trimming leader knots as flush as possible. Awful hard to do(safely) with a blade.

Scissors are no doubt an extremely handy tool to have around and I've been examining my scissors use over the last couple of months. In my experience they are primarily used for light duty tasks like personal grooming, trimming threads and trimming the ends of my home rolled cigarettes. For these types of tasks I've found that the scissors on 58mm Vics and keychain Leathermans work fine. For larger/harder cutting tasks I prefer using a very sharp knife. The scissors on 91mm Vics, while of excellent quality, don't offer me any added utility and are a relatively thick layer with a back layer tool (hook) that I rarely use, so I'm now avoiding or removing Vic scissors on the 91s.
