I think the octane system used in the US & Canada differs from the European one

How so?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

Difference between RON and AKI
Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, the octane rating shown in Canada and the United States is 4 to 5 points lower than the rating shown elsewhere in the world for the same fuel. See the table in the following section for a comparison.

Also this a a very good site, where I learned of that some years ago:
http://www.carbibles.com/fuel_engine_bible_pg3.html

In Europe, what you'll see on the petrol pumps is the RON. However, in America, what you'll see on the petrol pump is usually the "mean" octane number - notified as (R+M)/2 - the average of both the RON and MON. This is why there is an apparent discrepancy between the octane values of petrol in America versus the rest of the world. Euro95 unleaded in Europe is 95 octane but it's the equivalent of American (R+M)/2 89 octane.[/i]

Nice car, Reinier! :salute: Bigger too. I made the same decision last winter when buying a new car. Didn't think too much of the added gas expenses though. Stronger engine/more gas

Well, my employer pays for my diesel  :D

Talking about milage, just a few weeks ago our other car turned 100kkm. That's a lot of €€ burned, that's what it is  :twak:

(Image removed from quote.)

This is the best I've done with my 530xi (gas, summer and all hiway kms). I have around 150k on it now. I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota 4 door 4x4 that can drink fuel if it wants to.

Nice car!

I like Volvos but they are pretty pricey here.  The basic c60 here starts at almost twice the price of a Golf, otherwise I would have looked more seriously at them when my wife needed a new car.  We don't see too many on the road here because of that.

Thanks!
They are more expensive than a Ford Focus or VW Golf over here, but a little bit cheaper than say an Audi A3 or BMW 1-series (same segment). Not that it matters to me because I didn't pay for my orange Volvo myself ;)

That's my favorite kind of car!

I got a bonus from work to help pay for my new Jeep and many of my upgrades are either paid for by my employer or I get to claim back on my taxes since it is a work vehicle.

All in all, it's a very good arrangement when you can have a new vehicle and not all of the bill!

That sounds good :)

BTW I didn't mean that my car doesn't cost me anything; in the Netherlands you have to add 14%, 20% or 25% of the car's fiscal value to your taxable income (in the case of vehicle leasing). And with a tax rate of 52% that's a reasonable amount of money.

I think what we call "fiscale bijtelling" is best translated to "additional tax liability"

That looks like an aftermarket compact kit..... It shrinks the car so it fits in tighter spaces!

We're trading our 4 month old Civic for a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS tomorrow evening.  The Civic was a good car, but me being 6'4", the top of my head touched the roof, and the seats were VERY uncomfortable for me.

We took the Elantra for a good long drive yesterday, and it's a really nice car!  I was impressed with all the features it has, and how it drove.  It's no VW (I love VW's), but my wife drives over 80km per day, so we wanted something affordable and good on fuel.

I'll keep driving my Grand Cherokee until it falls apart probably.  It does burn 3x the fuel the car does, but I'm only a couple of mins from work.

Good luck with the Elantra!  I hope it works better for you than the Civic did.  My brother has the Touring version (wagon) and he loves it.

Terry, I was given some great driving advice years ago that maybe I should have shared earlier.....  An old girlfriend's father once suggested that driving wasn't so hard, and that success came from simply keeping the car between the ditches.  :D

traded my Jeep a couple months ago for a '13 silverado. Miss the jeep but the power and room of the truck makes up for it. Gas mileage is better too.

i went all out on my chevy...it's a 1500 with the 5.3 liter hd towing package, all the fancy gadgets, z hd suspension, 6 speed auto. Has manual in case you want low speed. Engine cuts 4 cylinders on the hiway to save gas.

i looked and drooled on those HD models - diesel and the big gas engines. One was a 3500  4x4 dually crew cab. Allison transmissions,  :o

one day maybe  ::)
