Received Spirit Today
on: January 10, 2008, 08:31:11 PM
              :mail:

I received the Victorinox Spirit S I ordered from Felinevet, all in good order. Upon iniitial examination there was an evident higher quality of fit, finish, and construction as opposed to the multi-tools I have thus far encountered. Tools moved smoothly and locked into place positively. The pliers can be deployed one-handed if you are dextrous enough to do so. Pliers move into place smoothly and ther must be detents in the system as there are audible clicks. The overall impression is of a superior quality tool.
I decided to test some of the tools. I eschewed some for the simple reason that they did not apparently vary significantly from the tools in Victorinox SWAK's. The first thing I tried were the wire cutters, they did successfully cut a heavy-gauge fence wire ,this did require some twisting as the hard wire notch is quite small. I next cut a piece of 2-strand barbed wire,I twisted the wired apart first so they would fit into the notch. This was done with no evident damage to wire cutters. I also cut some smaller gauge, stranded electrical wire which it did quite smoothly.
The next tool tested was the file which I used on a piece of bed-rail,this iron being harder and more resistant then standard angle iron. It did file away material easily enough, though it will not bite into properly heat treated knife steel. It should be noted that neither will a nicholson file. I did try the "metal saw",I found it a little awkward as it cuts on the backdraw, but it will work.
The woodsaw was first tried on a 3/4" square section of pine wood, which it cut through cleanly.I then cut two branches (fallen wood, but still quite strong) .The first was 1" in diamater and the saw cut through this. The next was 2 1/4" in diameter and took considerably longer. I did get it cut,but this is probably the biggest wood you could cut with a saw this size.
I tested the phillips head driver on a drywall screw in a piece of 2 x 6 . I used the driver to sink the screw deeply into the wood and then to withdraw it. No slipping was evident. The final tool I checked was the combination chisel/strong crate opener. The chisel did into wood well enough, but would be improved by a good sharpening. I used the tool also to pry up the edge of the 1/4" plywood nailed to the top of my workbench. It worked ok,there was some signs of flexing,so the tool has limits, but I wouldn't worry about using it to open a can of paint or take apart a light wood assembly.
I'll probably be testing the tool more in the days to come, anything I find out I will report. Victorinox probably needs to make the wire notches larger. They are probably built it this way to avoid having someone use the tool on something too large for it to handle. Overall it's a good tool and I am considering purchase of another or a Swisstool.

My new suspicion, after hearing of all these happy Spirit owners, is that the steel is laced with acid, which also explains why people need to own several.

Great review!  I'm a bit surprised that the metal file cut on the backdraw--my Spirit file's teeth are angled forward.

DuckTapeHero-Yah.It works fine, haven't had a chance to check out the pliers really. Used the weird knife blade (Freddy Krueger shaving razor) to open a plastic package. Give it an A+ overall.

Micky D- Thanks! Now I have to decide whether I want another Spirit S as backup or to try a Swisstool. Only have money for one more. As I've said before I like the complement of tools on this multi more than any other.

Nomad-No more delusions than I normally get. :ahhh

NutSAK-Thanks! I just double-checked and it's hard to tell(damn bi-focals),but I may have been mistaken there.I cannot tell for sure until I find a magnifying glass.

NutSAK-You are right about the teeth they are pointing forward,to cut on the push. Had to take it outdoors in the sun and use a magnifying glass too. :-[ :-[

Micky D-Redundency is a bad thing?  :)

I saw my first Real Life Spirit today.  :ahhh

$139. (for comparison - LM Kicks retail in most places at $99)

I didn't get a chance for a fondle, so I'm not sure if it was regular or "S" model, but I do declare it was an effort of will to keep it in my pants (My wallet that is)

When I look at other multi-tools (Gerber,Leatherman,et al) I see no real comparison to the Victorinox models. I won't denigrate another's choice, but for myself the Victorinox appears to be an obviously superior product.

1 usd= 1.12 aud (and our dollar is bad now) so 100 usd= 112 aud
I payed 36 usd for my bo spirit (deal of course but online and free shipping) so that would be 40 aud!
Aussie prices are expensive!!!

I don't like to compare Online vs Retail costs, as my sanity depends on the lie that retail offers you much greater personal service, thus the increased pricing.

Still, we seem to get stooged a bit.

What I've noticed as standard pricing  -
Climber (and similar models) = $50 (or 49.95)
Rucksack (and similar models) = 70something.
Swisstool = $200. ( or 199.99)

This certainly explains why there are not many Australian Multitool Collectors!

I would have to give up drinking for over a month to save for a Swisstool!

(Vics are still cheaper than any similar sized Gerber or Leatherman I have ever found)
