New SOG
on: November 09, 2006, 03:27:07 AM
Check out the new Paladin PowerPlay 540, made by SOG.
It looks to be based on a PowerLock chassis, with some enhancements. So far I'm noticing a radical new plier head, with wire stripper notches. And it looks like a different blade lock release mechanism. Also, the handles look different, with some strange cutouts and notches?

Anybody know more about it?

The PT-540 is now sold at http://amazon.com

I like how the sharp gear teeth in the Paladin PT series tools are shielded while the handles are closed so they don't pose a hazard.  Hope the next generation of SOG-branded multitools will incorporate the same improvement.

SOG tools have always unfortunetaly occupied the top end of the multitool price level- at least until Leatherman came out with titanium and 154cm.

I like the looks of this new tool. It's all radical and Robo Coppy looking. Something that Arnold the Terminator might EDC for maintaining his x-ray laser cyclatron rifle. And if I know SOG, the thing works as good as it looks. I want one.

A common misconception. Some rouge T800 unit actually only did a product endorsement deal with Gerber in order to get some beer money. SkyNet regs specify only genuine SOG's as standard issue to Terminator units.

I always wondered about that with the Terminators- all those exposed wires... why waste time shooting them when you could probably just run up to them with a good set of wire cutters?   I'll bet the SOG compound leverage would give them a critical fault in Drive C pretty quick.  They all you would have to do is click "no" when the "Do you want to continue running Death.exe?" and you could move on to the next one!

Q: What the heck is a spudger?

It is their name for the extension to the hook blade, it apparently can be used to rake the muck out of a wall socket before replacing the plate, like you would normally do with a fine screw driver.

The only reason I knew that was because through reading the use of the tools on the Paladin site I learned a usefull use for the hook on my Cybertool. A parcel carrier it said on the Vic sheet I got, hooking wires makes far more sense.  :-[

Eeww, I think this thread is going downhill in a hurry.

Okay, back on track:
I'm looking real close at these pictures, and a couple things are buggin' me. What is that hex-looking cut-out for partway down the handles? It looks to be a double thickness of metal there for some reason?

And what is the little doo-dad hanging just below the plier handle pivots?

From Wikipedia

"The term spudger describes a general class of tool used for poking, adjusting, or adjusting small wires or components, generally in the electronics or telecommunications industries.

The most common spudger is a black or yellow nylon stick, with a bent metal hook at one end. Various versions have blunt, sharpened, or insulated hooks. The hook can be used for pulling bridge clips from 66 blocks, manipulating wires in a crowded wire wrap block, or setting DIP switches. The body of a plastic spudger is usually contoured to offer a better grip."

I think the significant is that a spodger is normally made out of plastic, nylon or anything that is non conductive. That is why I said it is their name for the tool I know I would not like to use that anywhere there was live voltage no mater what current was involved, for instance try and use that to get a wire cover that you have just striped from a wire out from under a mother board I think you will soon see that all computers run off steam  ;) as you catch a couple of solder beads under the board. I think I will stick to a made for the job tool. they cost next to nothing.  :-\

I kinda thought a metal implement would be a bad thing when working with electricity, but then I could electrocute myself looking at a painting of lightining...

Seriously- I built a model car as a kid, installed a small motor, as per the instructions, and when I put batteries in it (didn't even turn it on!) they started to smoke!

Electricity and I don't see eye to eye.
