recommend some camping plates
on: December 19, 2011, 04:08:59 PM
The wife has given the new cat my camping plates and I really don't fancy them back now, he's a messy eater and I'm vegetarian so it's not a great combination, anyway he seems to like them.

So I need some replacements, preferably in the UK, metal and I'd consider a set as the rest of my eating things are a bit worn too, any recommendations at a reasonable price?

we normally use lightweight plastic bowls instead of plates.

Might consider plastic but I was thinking more about something like this

http://www.blacks.co.uk/camping/chairs-and-stools/product/095752/x-bowl.html?attribute=165856

perhaps I should do away with the replacement plates idea and get a single mess kit instead

I got some cheap enamel coated plates for camping over 10 years ago.
They have been through hell being used for camping, bumped around, used for cutting in, used in the oven and for the past few years going in the dishwasher several times a week and are still going strong. They have a very nice old fashioned look too.
I do not have any other plates that old, including plastic plates.
Really tough material. I have also seen enamel bowls and pans that are several decades old and still work fine.
Some are like this

and some like these

Right now I'm using these: http://www.tiso.com/shop/mikkimugs/plastic_uniplate/  light, tough and cheap to replace if necessary.  I'm liking the idea of getting some traditional white/blue enamel though, match up with my mugs. :)

I have a set of orikaso, here and here but there plastic, tough, durable, lightweight, easy to pack, cheap and a little bit fun to assemble, available in various colours and sets :tu:

I actually want to try out a Sea to Summit X-Bowl as shown here http://www.seatosummit.com/products/display/67

They're collapsible silicone bowls and plates with a hard bottom section.
They look nifty.

Well thanks to this thread I've just ordered myself one of these. ::)

I quite like that- not often you see them with a decent depth to them

yeah, that's what I liked about it as well, lets you eat some more sloppy foods.  Same seller seems to have quite a lot of good looking enamelware, including this rather natty looking tea can.

I've been after one of those Billy's for years ... but in red (maroon ideally). They only ever seen to appear in the ye olde white with blue trim though. My dad used to have one when I was a small kid. He worked on the railways and along with his flags and signalling lamps, that was one of his most important bits of kit  ;)

Apparently first job everyday was to get the pot belly stove fired up in the guards van and get the "mash can" on the go. Thirty plus years later, I want one for down at the boat

Great find  :tu:

Those are probably closest so far to what I was thinking of and the price is great too.
