titanium scales for 91mm SAK - can anyone make?
on: December 28, 2011, 12:02:51 AM
Since it is a separate question, I thought I would start a new thread rather than asking this question in my bare necessities SAK mod thread.

As mentioned by Tattoo Steve there, any material can be made into scales.

So I was wondering, why not titanium?

Any thoughts? Anyone who works with titanium? Any idea about costs?

Yes, I have seen some of the photos of his work, absolutely amazing.

Hopefully he can give us some info on the nature of making titanium scales, nothing fancy, no slots for tweezers, toothpicks or pens, just two slabs of gently rounded titanium. And costs.

I don't make overlay scales that you can just stick on in place of the plastic ones. I kind of see 91mm SAKs as a collection of fine stainless Swiss tools that are held together by cheap plastic and aluminum so we can buy them for $20-$30 each. I'm replacing the shirasaya, so to speak. What I do is just replace that plastic and aluminum, and the awful brass pins, with something more fitting to the quality of the tools and in the process making a platform that you can always replace tools in without breaking out the peening hammer.
