Detron's Collection and the $12.00 Display system
on: October 05, 2013, 12:48:45 AM
OK, overall I prefer used cheap finds, especially when speaking of SAKs.  Granted I have a Charge TTi, but I for the most part love the $4 SAK, or the flea market/ebay cheapies.  I may drool over limited editions, or short runs, but I cannot justify that type of purchase.

Since I try to collect cheap, I cannot fathom the idea of a display that costs as much as I put into this hobby in six months.

so I went to the thrift store, spent $9 on 4 items, then I spent $3 on some spray paint.

I bought 2 Display ledges one is exactly the picture below, and the other is similar.

I also bought 2 of these 30 Cassette tape holders

Next I took the back off of both cassette tape holders, and removed every other slat to double the individual storage spot height.

Then I mounted each cassette holder to a ledge, and put hooks on the bottom of one of them.
Next I spray painted them.

I should have taken pictures before filling them up, or even as I was building these, but excitement displaced my common sense.

so here is my collection, in my budget display system (2 pieces)

now the lower left one is my SAKs, and hte upper right is my other stuff, except I have my 58mm SAKs hanging from the hooks on the bottom

now the breakdown

1.  troubleshooter {removed Marlboro scales and added Black Plus scales}
2.  SwissChamp
3.  Cybertool 41
4.  Pioneer
5.  MiniChamp
6.  Classic
7.  Classic
8.  Champion {Circa 1985}
9.  Explorer {circa 1976}

12. Camper
13. Hiker
14. Compact {x2, the second is behind the one seen}
15. McKinley Camo Scales
16. Standard Eco
17. Bantam
18. Recruit II
19. Salesman
20. Ambassador
21. Executive
22. Wenger Commander
23. Wenger traveler
24. Wenger Crusader

The 4.5" tools will not fit inside my display, but I can work around that.

1.  My new SwissTool
2.  Gerber MP600 with replaceable cutters
3.  Surge
4.  Wingman
5.  Wire-cutter multitool
6.  Micra with red plastic shell
7.  Micra
8.  Micra
9.  Squirt S4 (Blue)
10. Squirt ES4 (Black)
11. Squirt P4 (Blue)
12. Squirt PS4 (Blue)

Most of my tools are second hand,however, that does not bother me at all.

Thanks for reading!

That's pretty sweet detron! Nice collection you have too :tu:  There's nothing wrong with going with used tools either, most of mine came to me in used condition as well.

I got that Camo McKinley at the flea Market for $10.  I just thought I had an optional partially serrated blade for a month or so, then I found the McKinley on SAKWiki.  so that is technically my coolest piece in many ways.

Very nice.  I'd be a little concerned about displaying them all.  My wife is very patient but the display might push her over the top!  Maybe a small cabinet and "circulate" them once in a while.

To me it is  :drool: worthy, until I window shop other collections on MT.O
I do love my collection and I am glad others share theirs.
Chako's drawer shots are harder to look away from than the picture below

but I am a budget collector, and I try to show restrain and only buy when the price is right.
when I look on ebay, I look at newly listed, buy it now, and look for people who have awesome prices.
after that I will look around, but I strive for the amazing price only.

Great display method - the best part is the miscellaneous items and carabiners hanging from the underside!
