Newbie with a SAK mod :)
on: January 01, 2012, 07:22:21 PM
HI! sorry if this is in the wrong section   I'm new :waving:

Im modding my SAK, its a 58mm one i think, its the smallest one i think and has just a small blade, file/flat screwdriver and scissors, ive removed the scales and scissors as i plan on replacing the scissors with my front door key  :D, incase it went wrong i used an old one, but its a promo one and says alka seltzer on the side lol, so i want some new scales but i dont know where to buy them, one side is slightley thicker as it has a small pen in it.

Also i managed to remove the brass rod with minimal damage, but i dont know where to get a replacement end thingy what clamps the brass rod.

Sorry for the vauge essay and thans for any help you can provide

Thanks jamie

EDIT: also does anyone make carbon fibre scales that i can buy ?

Nice idea! Post pics :D

Rotokid's shop sells 58mm scales and a whole load of other modding supplies.

Also the Mod Squad forum here might help you out: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/board,16.0.html

Cool idea!  If it works out, you could try it with a bigger 58mm like a Rambler so you don't have to give up the scissors.

Thankyou for the kind replys :tu:

I dont use the scissors to much and the small form factor make it the perfect size for a key, its basically the same as carrying a key on its own with the added advantage of a blade

Thanks

From what I understand you will not find a source for those small bushings that fit over the pins and the scales snap onto. You will need to reuse the old ones or if you damaged it tear apart another 58mm SAK and use those.

New pins and scales can be had, just click here;

^^ I did fear this but in anticipation i only removed the one pin needed to remove the scissors, so the other 3 will hold the scales on if worst comes to worst  :D

I'm sure some of us has an extra 58mm or pins well share at no or little cost ;). That's why we are here :tu:
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I'll bear that in mind ;)

It's the little end bits that I think are the problem but firstly are the scales, I don't know where to buy them, one scale has the pen in it so it's thicker and I think I will struggle to get one for the pen so I might end up sacrificing the pen :( I like the pen lol

If the scale is not too damaged it could be polished up. Check out my blog or do a search here for polishing the scales. I know those old Signature I style ink pen scales are no longer made but sometimes you can find new or like new knives with them.

There not damaged I just don't like them lol, they're advertising alka seltzer ( if that's how it's spelled ) so it makes it look cheap and free lol

IF the advertising is printed on it can be sanded off and then the polishing can be done. I have done it and there is a video on You Tube too.

Actually I would love to have those cool scales. That is the Signature Type II model and is still available new on eBay if you want new scales. The ink pens are easily bought new as well.

UPDATE: for anyone intrested

Today went bad, basically, i lost my temper and there was some collateral damage lol, i found i did not have enough hands to get the key in position, depress the spring and get the brass rod through, after some struggling i got it in but only half way, it should have been just long enough but it would not go through both sides, because of this and the springs applying pressure it started to twist and open up, i panicked a little bit and after a lot of swearing my hulk strength broke the key which i had spent quite a while perfecting, that was the last nail in the coffin and i gave up

Total damage £4.50 key cut, £1.50 drill bit and one Signature Type II

And Pics

and a half way progress pic of the key

All maybe lost but i will have another go soon, either with a new SAK or this one if it is salvageable

Jamie

WOW! That key looks delicate Jaimie.
You're lucky that didn't break off in the lock mate  :ahhh :ahhh

Would there be an alternate way to mount the key without removing so much material

The key was like tin foil lol, for some reason i cant get a key cut out of some propper material, keys that come with doors/locks are propper metal, keys that you get cut are a real cheap aluminium.

Sadly due to it being the samllest SAK there is no way to leave more material, the pic above was a half way pic, i actually had to remove some more material after this pic including the bottom notch that stops the key from goin in to far lol, theres not much space at all lol

Not a bad first try, but I think you've discovered why usually when we see this kind of mod, it started off life as a Leatherman Micra or sometimes a Squirt, or maybe a Gerber Clutch. Thicker/stronger pivot pins, more metal on the key.

That and you started off modding a 58mm- those tinee tiny little pins would make want to hurl the whole thing out a window.

Your so right, as soon as I find somewhere that will cut me a stronger key I'm gonna have a go at putting it on my LM squirt p4, I just need to find the diameter of the holes for new rivets, or if I can find them, chicargo screws ( I think that's what there called ), no luck on diameter so far tho, the key will replace the two small pointy things I will never use, I don't even know what they are for

Being very optimistic I would like to find some kind of anodised torx screws for the squirt, easy disassembly ;)
