Spirit: is the file stainless steel?
on: January 02, 2012, 04:01:21 PM
I've had the Spirit X for awhile and I noticed that the file appears to be stainless steel.  Then I read on SAKWIKI that Vic switched to a stainless file on their SAKs, so I was thinking they did the same thing with the Swisstools.  So, is the file stainless?

On my two normal Spirits, I remember thinking that it looked different than the other tools, like it was chromed or something.

I don't have one handy right now, but I will double-check later.

Yes, I believe it always has been.

I think the switch predates spirit. The chrome file us much less aggressive than thread new stainless, and the spirit file is definitely the more aggressive type.

I agree. I checked my Spirits and they look the same as the other blades.  I was thinking of an older Champion (plus?) that is definitely different, as jzmtl describes.

Nothing to add on the stainless front but the Spirit has an awesome file, I used mine sometime ago to cut through a 1/4" galvanised steel cable that was sticking out of the ground, part of an old fence, filed it effortlessly, got to be one of the best files out there :tu:

It must be a costly and labor intensive process to produce a stainless file, since stainless is harder than carbon steel.
