93mm Back tool question
on: January 05, 2012, 06:42:14 PM
Pardon my ignorance, but I was thinking about making a Farmer/ Pioneer/ 93mm alox with scissors and got to thinking about back tools.  I know that this has been discussed somewhat in the past, the hook for example in this thread; however, I was looking at a 91mm Vic that maybe a donor knife and was wondering if in fact the actual tool and back spring determine whether or not a fourth pin is needed.

For example, the hook/ scissors layer doesn't appear to use the fourth pin at all, where as one using a corkscrew would rely on that fourth pin.  Can anyone confirm this for me?  I don't find the hook to be particularly useful, but if adding it will help maintain the proper amount of "snap" to the scissors, I see no harm in including it or even the awl with hole for that matter...

Edit: after looking through the mod thread, I found Rahmed's comment that back tools were impossible and offered the following image as a solution.  What I fail to understand is why a hook cannot be put in place of that brass tube?

It's the position of the hook/tool in reference to the spring I believe. Notice that the hole for the bushings is back further that a regular 91 mm
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

yep the hole is in the wrong place to add backtools on 93 mm alox.  If you want backtools your best option is 84 mm frame, or 91 mm with custom made scales.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

Yeah I did the 84mm the other day, I was just hoping to not waste the space when I attempt another mod...

If you use the old style backspring it will not have the back side tool cut out. See harryf3's mod in the sticky.
