Multitool.org Multitools
on: January 12, 2012, 07:12:17 PM
Given my recent attempts at becoming a photographer it occurred to me that I should probably take some new and decent shots of all the Multitool.org edition multitools.  So, strap yourself in, this is going to be a long one!  Oh, and if you are on dial up or have limited bandwidth, navigate away from this page before it's too late!

In no particular order, here are the Multitool.org Multitools!

The latest release is the Style PS, some of which may still be available- contact Travis at travisautry@msn.com for details.

The Style CS was done about a year ago- it's not really black oxide, it just looks that way because of a crappy photographer mucking about with lights!  Still, it would look awesome in black in case the folks at Leatherman are reading this!  :pok:

Next up is a couple of really neat tools, and probably the most successful Multitool.org tool to date- the MTO Raker Ring Tools!  Look for news about the RRT in the new year!  :D

There were actually four different versions done, but I only grabbed these two, black oxide and Damascus when I was setting up my light tent.

Perhaps the next most successful MTO tool was this little guy, which wouldn't have seen production had it not been for the support shown by this community!  It's nice to have made our mark on the multitool industry!  :D

Getting on to full sized tools, here's one that very few people took advantage of due largely to issues with the supplier.  This is the Multitool.org Gerber MP600 Pro Scout:

Next up is a series of SOG samples that we never went ahead with, but could pull the trigger on anytime if there was enough interest.  We'll start with the Multitool.org Edition Pocket Power Plier.

Original PowerLock:

PowerLock 2.0:

And last but not least, the ParaTool- in fact, despite being the smallest tool this may be the coolest since it's the only SOG to have been labelled twice- once on each side!

This next item isn't a tool per se, although it does kind of look like a lightsaber!  It is in fact our Multitool.org Monarch 200 that came out at the same time as the Multitool.org Style CS pictured above.

And now for the moment you have probably all been waiting for, the most requested Multitool.org multitools, the Charges!  We'll start with the Green ALX, number 010.

Then we move on to the prototype of possibly the next Charge run, the Tiger Stripe TTi:

This brings us to the Blue Charge ALX, number 001:

And, for our final tool of this post we have the Multitool.org Artifact:

This is sadly not a complete list- in addition to these there are a few others not pictured for a few different reasons.  There's the Multitool.org Fourth Anniversary Juice model, seen here in an old photo:

There is also the Charge ALX pictured below, which I didn't include as it was a gift from Leatherman and not an actual Multitool.org Edition tool.

And there's the Multitool.org Edition SwissGrip which I couldn't photograph as I have not got one yet.   :-[  It might be of interest for some of you to note that this model was actually shown in an issue of Tactical Knives- I know, because I wrote it!  Look at the bottom right of this page to see it.

Of course if you want to see any of these re-run or otherwise made available, let us know and we'll see what we can do!

I was embarrassingly thinking to myself "I don't have even one of these". :-[  Then I remembered; I've got a Damascus RRT!   The MP600 would be nice to own I think, but the green Charge is just: .

If we could get Gerber to release the Shard, why can't we get Leatherman to re-release the Kf4 or Victorinox 84mm scissors (despite the latter no longer having the equipment :().  :ahhh

In Gerber's defense, they were doing the odd short run of Shards as giveaways for shows like SHOT, Blade and OUtdoor Retailers, which is how I'd gotten my first one.  They were concerned about running it next to the Artifact, which at an MSRP of $15 would have meant that the Shard would have to come in at $10, and might steal some focus from the Artifact.  And, let's face it, it's not worth quibbling about tools at such a low price point, so they likely went with the Artifact simply because it offered more functions.

Little did they know that we have nothing better to do with our time than quibble over tools, regardless of price range!  >:D

I debated putting this one in since it was a limited run for promotional purposes rather than sales, but since I got all my gear out again anyway for the Micro ToolClips, well here's the Multitool.org Fourth Anniversary Leatherman Juice S2:

And the Micro ToolClips- sorry to SOG for forgetting these!

Black:

Blue:

Green:

Pink:

I should also take a moment and credit the folks who made these possible, although I was only involved at a minimal level so if I make a mistake I'm certain Travis will be happy to correct me!

Leatherman Style PS, Style CS, Monarch, Juice S2 and Shard are from www.rockynational.com.

All SOG items done by SOG.

Gerber Artifact and Pro Scout were from www.gerber-tools.com.

Wenger SwissGrip done by Wenger.  www.wengerna.com

Leatherman Charges were done in house- I can't say who because they would like to remain anonymous (although it shouldn't be hard to figure it out!), but I would like the people involved to know I appreciate the etching and assembly/disassembly, and in the case of the Green and Blue Charges, the anodizing and machining of new scales on top of that.

The Raker Ring Tools were done by Ray Kirk, who took it upon himself to order a new stamp just for this run based on a few members saying they would be interested.  www.rakerknives.com

A huge thanks to Travis, because even the ones where he wasn't directly involved, he was the poor sap who had to dig through his files for proper logos in the proper formats for everyone!

:tu: to everyone involved, whether you helped build them, etched them, supplied them, shipped them, organized them or bought them!

Nice!!!

What were their prices?

The Green and Blue Charges I think were about $140, the Tiger Stripe will probably be somewhere around $200 (if it happens) and the others that actually were made available were pretty close to the regular prices on them- the Micro ToolClips were in the $10-15 range or so... that's about all I can remember off the top of my head.

The last time we started with aluminum models and fashioned new aluminum scales.  This time around if it happens, we'll be replacing the aluminum scales with titanium ones, which will account for the extra cost... in case anyone is wondering.

But there are no definite plans at the moment as one or more of our suppliers are too otherwise occupied to put anything together for us.... unless of course we want to pay a heck of a lot more!

Here is my lineup of MT.O limited edition tools.

Blue Charge #5.  It has made an amazing journey: Jsews, Benner, Mike LotS, and DaveK and now back to the USA and me.  :D

Special edition Juice S2:

Style CS:

Shard:

Raker Ring tool (Damascus):

Mini driver:

and perhaps the rarest MT.O of all:

The Bear Grylls MTO edition Machete (I got this from a former member who was special ops/police officer with black belts in 4 different martial arts):

 :D ;)

Oh dang!  I forgot! I also have the MTO Wenger Swissgrip! :ahhh

Nice collection Nate!   :tu:

Your chronology is a bit off- Blue 005 went from J-Sews to Micky D then to Benner, then DaveK and then you... but close enough!  That is certainly the best traveled of all the MTO tools!  Although Green 010 has a hidden surprise... :D

There is a lot of work that goes into them- first off we need to buy the titanium stock and have it machined to the correct size.  Here's how that's done with the aluminum scales from last time:

Then the completed scales need to be sent halfway across the US to the member who will etch them for us, then shipping to the member who will disassemble the original Charge, then re-assemble it with the new scales, then they get sent on to Travis for distribution to the members who want to buy them.

Considering the standard TTi retails for $150, I don't think $200 is too far out for a customized AL or ALX with etched titanium scales.  I'd also like to point out that the etching process we are using on the Tiger Stripe is as indestructible as the titanium itself- I have been EDC'ing mine and there are no chips or scratches in the black coating at all.

Of course the flip side of the coin is that there's no warranty on our custom versions- if you send it to Leatherman they likely will send it back saying they won't service it because it's been modified.
