Chances are your machine only has space for two sticks.  If you bought it brand new it's probably got 2x 1g sticks in it, which means you'll have to buy 2x 2g sticks.  Then, changing the RAM isn't usually a big problem.  It should be one or two screws to remove the panel then two clips that hold the RAM in.

I actually video'ed the RAM change on my laptop if you want to see it.

Another issue to be aware of is that 32bit operating systems do not have support for more than 3.5gb of ram, so unless you have XP64 or Vista64 you won't be able to take full advantage of the 4GB. And in some cases it may cause instability of the system.

Ok, let me clean it up a bit and I'll post it on YouTube.

It's a pretty simple thing- you'll see in the video it took me all of about 4 minutes to do.

They may not be much help to anyone, but I have two 512mb sticks of DDR2 pc 5300 sticks.  I was going to put them on eBay but if anyone here can make use of either or both of them, please send me a message.
