SOG TiNi & PVD coating development
on: August 03, 2024, 02:53:10 PM
In 1997 SOG brought to market a remarkable series of Titanium Nitrate coated multitools. These have since become collectors items for many and still catch eyes to this day. Their manager of product development had ordered several coats to try to decide which they were going to market. They ended up choosing the gold TiNi because it would look good to the general consumer market and because it was the most affordable of choices for PVD coating processes. He kept in his personal possession several of the other colors they tried out. He has since turned 78 and believed it time to give these gems another life and sold most of his SOG collection. I was fortunate to bid and with a little goodwill I got them in my possession. I present to you the Blue, Copper and Black PVD coated SOG PowerPlier, PocketPowerPlier and Crosscut multitools.

More info about the colors can be found here: https://westcoastpvd.com/pvd-colors/
My friend and multitool partner in crime Jay also has them documented here: https://onlysog.com/?s=PowerPlier+prototype&post_type=product

The Blue PVD has no titanium in it's coating and is fragile to scratching.
The Copper PVD is actually called "Rose Gold" in the PVD trade.
The Black TiNi was marketed only for the SOG CrossCut.

It is with great pleasure I can present these to you. I can make further photos if requested.

That is some very impressive SOGs.     :salute:  :hatsoff:  :woohoo:

I have several Gold TiN SOGS, but didn't know about Black, Copper or Blue finishes.

Hey Greg, it's been a while. I hope you're doing alright!
You should have a black tini in your collection somewhere, I think you mentioned it once when we had our TigerStripe correnspondence.
Anyway, I didn't know about the blue and copper (rose gold) until the ex-SOG manager wished to sell them.
There are Rainbow and Grey-type TiNi's as well, but only a few of each type. I and didn't have the luxury to bid on those too, because the blue ones were already expensive as is.

Cheers

G'day JB,

I'm still around and kicking, thanks for asking.  I hope things are going well for you (and they certainly are on the rare SOG colours front, obviously)  :tu:

I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that you are right, according to my spreadsheet I actually do have a Black TiNi SOG.  It is documented as a "CrossCut USA T50B TiNi BLACK, Unused, simple scissor grind, no pouch.  Very rare".

I think it might be time for me to get motivated and get going on the "Release" portion of my "Catch & Release" program, thus giving other enthusiasts a chance to enjoy some of the many special multitools I've been hoarding for years.

cheers, Greg C
