Machine then anodize for each color in descending order of voltages.   Anodizing a lower voltage won't effect color from a higher voltage.

Had to think about that one for a bit.....

So it's machined inbetween each colour - So the annodisation layer is effectively removed for the 'to-be' colours - and the earlier higher voltage colour is not affected by the lower voltage (colour)
Does that mean that the thickness of the scale for the crosses with the  lower voltage colours are actually thinner ?
I guess it's all microscopic

Yes the max thickness for tiox is about 200 nm so very very thin.

That makes sense. Sounds like a lot of work. But the result is great!

Ya Ive avoided doing very many colors in the past since well there arent many that look good.  No pink or pastel shades for me.  Basically there is a bronze, purple, blue, yellow then green.  No red or black which people keep asking for.

😁

(Image removed from quote.)

While I still have both of the SAKs you made for me with pocket clips and they still work perfectly. I really love this idea.

Would be better for my OCD then having a clip just on one side plus not covering up whatever beautiful scales are attached.

Here's something a bid different.  Cadet minus opener layer plus scissors and fork.  Ruler on back scale and Timascus cross :D

Not too much new lately, I mostly build alot of the same.  This one is a farmer but with small blade for can opener and I nipped the tip off a bit to make it fit a bit better and reshaped.

Ugh... family infected me good over the holidays and just finally back into the swing of things.  Nothing much new except I finally thought of an easy way to include the corkscrew mini driver in the drawer I do.  Just turned down the handle to 0.100" and it fits in the drawer with all the other accessories just fine.

Another stroke of genius mate - Great stuff

Is the handle still round? - Might be better to make it flat so it's easier to turn a screw when you grip it.

How about putting the Leatherman eyeglass bit in there?
Maybe make a tiny hole in a scale for a driver?

Noob....head wrecked!
I've been searching and reading threads for ages but this is my first post on here. Haven't modded an SAK before. First mission is to create an Alox Rambler, taking the scales from a donor Classic.

I was expecting to peen 1.5mm brass rod but read about pivot pins in this thread and they might be a great way to go. Assume I basically have to drill everything, get the pin length right and screw together?!

If I stick with peening, is there a good guide that's specific to Alox? I found guides for standard SAKs but want to know how to not damage the Alox scales.

Thanks!

Welcome Gobsheen to  :MTO:

I’ve no experience with screwed option as getting the correct parts is difficult where I live. My opinion is that this is a better option for small production runs where you can invest in setting up with the right tools and parts.

But I can comment on peening, as I’ve done about a dozen standard 93mm SAKs, mainly Cellidor, but some aluminum and brass scales like the pic below.

All I can say is practice, practice. I would not have been comfortable peening Alox in my first few builds, and even now, I know there’s a good chance I could damage some of the surrounding area of the pin as it takes many gentle hits to get the right shape of the head.

If it’s for your own pleasure, this may not be too much of an issue. But I’d suggest starting with a Cellidor SAK to get some practice.

Most of all, enjoy it. The peening process takes time but is very rewarding once done.  :salute:

You can cover the alox scale with a bit of old inner tube from a bicycle or something, that has holes cut out where the pins are, so that if you miss the pin, you hit the rubber and not the alox. :dwts:

Thanks all!

I might change my sequence a bit. I have an Alox classic and standard rambler to start on. A bit of dismantling of both first, then try putting the cellidor scales etc onto the classic to try some safer peening. Then move onto the Alox when I've had some practice.

Another question.......when you guys are peening, do you use a small peening hammer directly onto the rivet/rod, or do you use some sort of punch for better control?
