Was someone asking about Siggs?
on: January 23, 2012, 05:13:57 PM
Today, I whiffed someone off in my Sigg bottle.  Upon shining a flashlight (Lummi Raw NS  ;)), into the bottle, I could see a LOT of colonies of something in there.

Well, not being able to leave well enough alone,  I had to get a better look.  The problem is, my current work EDC does NOT have a can opener incorporated in it.  What to do?  Surely not going to use a mammoth tusk Vic exec to open it.  :-\   Stubby Razel doesn't have a point for good penetration.  So...

Out comes the RESOVLE!

It's perfect.  Semi-POS so if I break it, no big loss.  However, I'm happy to report it functioned perfectly.  I poked a series of holes with the very sharp awl around it, and then made thrust cuts with the wobbly but locking combo blade to open the bottle.

And now, the pics:  :D

The first two show how much wobble there is in the blade even with the lock engaged:

Here's the bottle opened:

Here's what I've been drinking :

And here are the tools of choice for today's project

Top show by the RESOLVE  :salute:

Since I work in a pathology lab :D,  I decided to investigate further.  Micro folks tell me they do not think it's bacteria, more likely mold from the shape and color.

So, I scraped a few off and made slides of it.  First off, these things are tightly bound to the bottle.  Really hard and tough to scrape off.

On routine stains, the material is mostly mineral deposits.  Yes, there is some bacteria in there, but only a little bit.  It's mostly deposits from the water!

I guess I owe Sigg an apology.  They say their coating is antibacterial (ie inhibits growth) and it appears that is correct.

That's some serious residue.  :o Did you carry only water in it or tee, energy drinks and such?

Is anyone else waiting for the pictorial on how he puts it back together?   >:D

That blade play is pretty scary, but it's good to see that not only did it work but that you also have enough fingers left to type out the story of how it was done!

Good point. Now I know that a Resolve can trash a Sigg bottle and still manage to save all the attacker's fingers.  :salute:  :D

Deposits might be harmless but certainly doesn't look appetising  ;)
Do Sigg recommend a treatment for that, other than can opener and macro lens?  :P

We've been using Hydroflasks.  They come with a wide mouth so are much easier to clean.

Those deposits can harbor bacteria other little nasties.   If they are indeed mineral deposits from hard water,  then they can be removed with a product containing phosphoric or other mild acids.  Vinegar can even work if you let is soak long enough.  I don't know if mild acids will have any adverse effects on the coating that Sigg uses on the inside of the bottle.
