Victorinox's answer to the Juice - Please...
on: January 31, 2012, 03:41:28 AM

I've only recently joined this forum - can't keep off it.....love it !!

I own a few SAKs both Victorinox and Wenger also a few MT's.
Tho' my judgement doesn't count for much in the presence of you fellas - my own personal view is that nobody beat's the Swiss for out & out tool/build quality........N O B O D Y

The magnificent swisstool is BIG, The spirit is much better, however I'm certain if victorinox were to reduce the spirit's size even further into the realms of the juice it would simply dominate the minitool market.

Can you even begin to imagine how sublime a swiss version of the juice would be...........

If they don't bring one out soon, I'll be forced to morph two alox's together.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

That's been a dream of many of us for some time now. There may be something in the works, Def gave a few hints about something new he saw from Vic, but nothing specific yet. I think/hope he was talking about something in this size.

The SwissTool was first shown in 1997. The Spirit came along in 2004.

It's definitely time for Victorinox to bring out the next smaller version. :salute:

I think Vic has held off so long because a Vic  version of a  “Juice” would cut into their SAK sales.

But if they did make a small multitool, I’d be interested.

I've been a dedicated Juice user for almost 10 years now.  My current CS4 has been my EDC for 6 years now.  The Juice series MT's have their flaws and need to be updated, but Leatherman doesn't seem interested in doing it.  About once per year I look at all options available that could replace a Juice, but none meet my needs the way a Juice does.

If Vic came out with their version the whole category would benefit because the Vic could address the well known issues with the Juice models and force LM to address them also.

I agree with everything you've said - I'm pretty certain if Victorinox were to take on the Minitool market now they would lead the pack.

Their prestige, quality control and innovation would certainly raise the bar.

Just to comeback to MeadMaker  -

With regards to the Juice - Do you think a 3" version of the  LM Charge would work ? - like wise a 3"  Vic' Spirit ?

I think it would - infact I think it's the simple answer.

What better than to take their class leader and copy it for the Minitool market.

One way victorinox/wenger could do this would be to make a smaller version of the Ranger series pliers to be able to fit onto a 84 or 91/93mm frame SAK, to give you a proper pair of pliers, with other implements, but without 'copying' the butterfly opening MT design.

in fact this has already been done (even before the Wenger Ranger I believe) by knife maker Aitor.  See this older thread; http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,7457.0.html

The Aitor is in a 108mm frame rather than 91mm though. :-\

That is an interesting idea Tosh and it would probably work for many people.  It might not work for me though.  The shape of the Juice keeps it from "printing" or showing an outline when I wear them in my dress paints for work.   They would also have to exclude some of the tools because it would be a little too thick for pocket carry.  That's why many people don't like the Juice Xe6.

Victorinox would make a fortune off of this if they would do it just off the collectors and modders alone. Not to mention just normal sales.

If the Gerber Balance was juice size it would be pretty perfect.

Point taken Meadmaker,

However I was thinking more along the lines of actually reducing the proprtions throughout, say 25% - not just shortening it's overall physical length.

Raukodur - that's an interesting concept - It would certainly work for me.

I own several Wengers both the regular SAK's and a few of their larger Ranger series and carry none of them - simply because the regular SAK is too limiting in todays world whereas the Ranger series is impractical for EDC, especially here in the UK.
If as you say, Wenger were able to overcome the engineering problems to combine both the physical size of the Ranger plier head and create a new SAK design to fit in between the two models.

That in theory would be a very, very versatile MT......Providing of course it had the inline end philips driver - not the back spring version.

Just a thought...

Does this forum carry any clout in influencing  manufacturers future design ideas?

Do they actually read these threads?

Or are we just seen as sad geeks.

Oh, they do read it. The Style PS is just a recent example. If I remember correctly, (I'm on my phone so I can't check) Obudsman designed it and Andreas made it. Leatherman just copied the idea.

I think the problem is Vic seems happy to make small incremental changes/improvements to the Swisstool & Spirit MT range. I would love to see a mini Spirit , but we have been waiting quite awhile for that.
I love the way Leatherman ,Gerber & a lesser extent SOG experiment/evolve their MT range. I know Vic do great things with SAKs but I want more MTs  :gimme: :gimme: :D

That's exactly what happened !  :salute: on behalf of Leatherman, they may had the idea and we just pushed them to make it real.

So, lets hope the same happens with Victorinox and they decide to make the mini tool !  :tu:
