Whatcha reading in 2012?
on: February 12, 2012, 06:34:21 AM
Just got thru with Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. Book differs quite a bit from the movie..very good read though. Just started Lost World by him and it too is pretty good.
Both go into much more detail than the movie ever could.

I have them both on my Kindle..but reading them in paperback.  ::)

Both of those are good books, though they are a bit old...

That being said, my reading list for 2012 includes:
Thucydides The Peloponnesian War I've read excerpts of this, but never went cover to cover
Maybe that's a bit older than Crichton...

(insert witty quote)

I am reading that too, along with "Where Troy once Stood" by Iman Wilkins.  I got a first edition for Christmas so I bought "A History of the Peloponnesian War" along with fresh copies of the Iliad and the Odyssey.  I love the periods described in these books!

As for novels, I just finished an Andy Mcdermott, and started a new Clive Cussler novel.

I have the Count of Monte Cristo and The Man In The Iron Mask on my phone right now but I haven't started either of them.  I tried to force my way through the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo to see what all the fuss was about, but it kinda stinks.  While I'm sure the story is wonderful it's a horrible read and I find myself having to force myself to turn the page.  Life is too short so I'm done with that one.

I just started Neptune's Inferno by James Hornfischer, about the naval battles off Guadalcanal during World War 2. The US Navy learned the hard way not to underestimate the Imperial Japanese Navy, and how to defeat them.  Hornfischer is a great author of naval history, his other two books about Word War 2 are incredible.

I'm about half way through The Emperor of all Maladies, a "biography" of cancer written by an American oncologist, fascinating stuff, not too dry and keeps technical jargon to a minimum after that I will start Breathe by Tim Winton, he's a well regarded Australian writer, I've been living in Australia for over 4 years but haven't read many local writers, it's meant to be great

Crichton fans... I liked Timeline and Airframe also.

I am backlogged on the kindle but right now i'm finishing Clancy's Locked On, in the middle of Follett's World Without End, and starting the new Steven King non-horror time travel book about the Kennedy assasination... 11/??/63. Love books, they keep me sane
