6V Drop in?
on: February 15, 2012, 01:02:12 PM

Another thread reminded me to ask, Does anyone know of a 'drop in' that I can use in my old 6v work torches please

Something that doesn’t involve a lot of buggering about would be good  :D

This is the sort of light I'm talking about

I would also like to know. Mine's been sitting around for ages. A new LED drop in would be great. :tu:

As long as it is the PR2 lamp base, there are MANY options.
I like the XR-E emitter that this retailer provides. Example:
 http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&category=&Page2Disp=%2Fpt%2Fbulbs.html
Lots of light without overheating the emitter in plastic bodied lights.

As long as expectations are realistic you won't be disappointed with the available choices out there.
I mod all of my lights (upgraded my JetBeam Jet II to XM-L lastly). The cost of most replacements are so affordable that modding isn't worth the time, unless you want to build out a Joule thief, etc.

Sparky you are welcome!  I love those style lanterns too!
For my floating 6V lanterns I am using these: http://www.dorcydirect.com/p-354-41-1644-40-lumen-45v-6v-led-replacement-bulb.aspx
Runtimes are incredible
 :D
The XR-E I posted before won't focus as well in that big of a reflector. There was a UK retailer for the Dorcy drop in's. If I can find that link again I'll post it.

Yep, most all of the drop ins are "+" center contacts. The Dorcy will most closely resemble the original incan lamp. Mostly throw, but whiter, cleaner beam.

Still trying to find that UK link, my local Fry's sells em' for $4.00 each.

The old maglite bulb is the same size as the PR2s on the superbrightleds website so all the terralux drop-ins for maglites should also work.
Pictures of most of my work can be found on my Facebook Page.
Also have a look at my Shapeways Shop and SW Torch Shop for 3D printed items.

It didn't quite as well as I had hoped

I assume the light is now coming out of the back of the torch and the 4 circles are the batteries, right?
 :D
Well, it just needs some fine tuning!  :tu:

Does anyone know how hot this little chap will get when its running?

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2Fpr2-3whp.html#photos
At 180 lumens it would probably just get warm to the touch. I have a sure fire 6p with a drop in that boosts it up to 300+ lumens and it only gets a little warm.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?
