Saw the thread title ....

Saw who posted it ...

Thought, this is going to be a thread about an axe with the head at the wrong end
(It's upside down Tony  :pok: )

I've seen those online before mate, but never up close. You reckon you'll have it in your possession in time for testing at Easter?  :pok: :pok:

The cam action is supposed to increase splitting efficiency apparently. With your collection of axes, my splitting maul and wood grenade, asnd the tackle Mark has kicking about ... I don't think theres much in the way of timber that's going to defeat us  :D

I bid on one of these about a year ago. They still have a web site 'chopper one'. If memory serves the downward force of the axe also throws out the side arms to aid splitting.

Those axes are great splitters, my grandfather had one.  The cams are spring loaded and activate on strike and actually push apart the sections of log.  There is a little animation on their site that shows the action.  https://www.chopper1axe.com/

Interesting, never saw those before.

Here's a demonstration of how it works straight from their webpage in full screen.

https://www.chopper1axe.com/imagesupload/cms_files/files/split.swf

The listing is a bit high as a new one costs about 50 quid.

... plus shipping, and that won't be cheap I reckon

One thing I do like about this though, is that on really knotty wood even a splitting maul or woodgrenade can get stuck. This looks like it "should" lift straight out if it doesn't split it completely

A axe with moving parts  :o :o. I wonder if the log splitter assists are prone to breaking

I recall as a lad, my father received one of those axes from my grandparents for his birthday. He was very thankful and appreciative, even inquiring as to where they had purchased it. I was rather intrigued myself with this fancy wood splitter, and after my grandparents left, I started pestering my father about going outside and giving it a test whack or two. :) But he just rolled his eyes... ::)

...and the next day returned it to the hardware store for a full refund. :(

I have to wonder how useful that really is?  On the one side a lateral force should help split the wood nicely, but that's only if you can penetrate the wood enough to engage the cams at a decent enough point to push out on.

There's only so much force you can put on an axe in each swing and if some of that force is diverted laterally then there's less penetration as as result.  At least, that's how I understand it, but it's been a while since I taught Physics so I could be wrong...
