Question for the SAK modders.
on: February 26, 2012, 09:41:24 PM
I know we have several members who do SAK mods; so far I've had Steve do one for me.

My question is simple; can the long thin philips driver that comes in the 111 mm models be put into a Climber, under the scissors, the way it is on an Outrider, Hercules, or Work Champ?

I love my modded Outrider that I had Steve do, but I'd still like something a little smaller; like a Climber, but I'm not willing to give up the #0 philips driver.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Edit:

Additional thought #1; could that same mod be done on an Explorer?  I was thinking it'd be sweet to have an Explorer with both the #2 AND #0 philips drivers!

Additional thought #2; could Alox scales be put on as well?

or maybe just go for the cybertool bit driver and not need any of the drivers?

Ah I see what you are asking, but I dont think there would be enough room on a 91mm frame.  I cant be sure though as I don't have any 111mm parts to verify.

Adding a cybertool layer to any 93mm sak would be the easiest, although it does add alot of width.

I think it would work on a 93mm frame with 84mm scissors.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Steve, let me make sure I'm understanding this right...  The Explorer is the 93 mm frame, right?

I measured the scissors in my Outrider and from the flat part where they attach inside of the handle to the tip, they're 80 mm long.  The #0 philips driver is 60 mm long, measured the same way.  Is this the same size that's in the Explorer, or is that larger?  By "84 mm", do you mean the next size frame down?

I checked the fit in my Outrider SM (Steve modded  :D ) and the fit is pretty tight between the tip of the scissors and the little prong they have that sticks up that you pull on to pull the philips driver out.

So, based on what you say above, and what I saw from looking at the fit of these tools my Outrider SM, that means a smaller pair of scissors would need to be substituted into the Explorer, like, the size of the ones in the Executive, if it was going to work?

Edit:

Here's another, but unrelated, question; are the magnifying glasses on the newer Explorers glass, or plastic?  The one in my old Swiss Champ is glass, but it looks like some of the Explorers out there now might have plastic lenses in them, but some look like they have the same one that's in my Swiss Champ.  The ones with that look like they're plastic are all in knives that sell for a lot less than the ones that look like they're glass.
